The Alma Doepel, one of the oldest three masted schooners in the world, is having an open day on Sunday, April 19 where you can see up close the progress of the current restoration of the 112 year old Alma Doepel.



Included in the open day experience is a sausage sizzle and an art exhibition. For lovers of boats, building things, man caves, art, restoring things. All proceeds will go towards the restoration the mighty Alma Doepel. This is no vanity project, the Alma does very important work sailing Port Phillip bay with a crew of youth development who come out the other end richer for the experience.

Over 4000 secondary school students in an 11 year period sailed on the Alma Doepel between 1988 – 1999. The aim of the training was not to turn the young participants into modern day Captain Ahabs in 9 days but, through a series of activities, teach self-reliance, initiative, healthy exercise and teamwork.



While you will see the Alma Doepel in less than pristine condition there will be an exhibition of artworks depicting the beauty as she once was and, of course, as she will hopefully be again.

The art exhibition will be at the Docklands Ocean Education Centre, shed 2, starting with a reception at 6PM on Friday, April 17. It's a great way to spend a Friday evening!



This will be an open day in every sense of the word, as the Alma will be open, hull and all, you'll step inside the manliest of man caves as you are granted, in all its glory, the answer to the question: where do you put a 148 foot, 150 tonne schooner back together?
