From the moment you step into the Pan Pacific Hotel in Perth, it is elegance personified. It does not appear huge, however, it looks luxurious. This hotel used to be called the Sheraton and as such, it was always a luxury hotel, and is now, I believe, a four-star hotel. From the concierge at the front to the staff at reception, this hotel provides friendly service.

The hotel has had a complete makeover in the lobby since it was the Sheraton and this has been done very tastefully.

Nestled on the Adelaide Terrace side of the hotel is Montereys Brasserie. This is their main dining room and is at the opposite end to the bars and tucked away near the lifts to the actual rooms.

Being a lover of most things seafood, I jumped at the chance to buy a special offer online for an "all you can eat" seafood buffet at this restaurant. I often go to a buffet at a different hotel, however, they stopped having oysters and I was attracted to this offer as they had a photo of oysters.

This cost $59 for two people and the normal value, if you walk in off the street, is $90 for two, so it was almost half price. At this cost, it is a cheap meal even if it were not seafood, but for a seafood buffet, this is excellent value.

The buffet itself was set out in sections and we were drawn of course, to the seafood first. It was very disappointing that the oysters shown in the photo were missing! However, there were still the most tender, delightful mussels, crab, and plump prawns to be had.

We ate this seafood plate first, and I had decided I would only have seafood for this meal. However after eating my first plate of food, we wandered around the area looking at the other food available, and I was so tempted, that I had hot food next.

Choices on the buffet here were endless - with all sorts of food including curries, chicken dishes, roasts, vegetables, noodles, pies, rice, fish and more. I chose the pork first as this looked very tender and had some amazing looking crackle with it! But of course, I did not stop there.

I also had some fried fish with an amazing separate dip, fish done in a white sauce, baby carrots, vegetable gyoza and some baked potatoes.

This was all done to perfections and nothing was disappointing!

My dilemma then was what to have next... should I try that rare roast beef that looked so good? Should I try some more hot meals or even the creamy pumpkin soup that looked good?

In the end, I decided to go back to the seafood instead of more of the hot food. My reasoning behind this was that I could make much of the hot foods and the seafood, apart from prawns, I rarely buy. I did not eat the crab legs, which are supposedly the best part, as I just could not handle breaking them up.

By now I was feeling strangely satisfied! But of course, the obligatory desserts awaited us! Having not had dessert for some time, I was quite hesitant - though on looking at the offered desserts, this feeling disappeared instantly!

There was a nice array of desserts, most of which were cakes and slices, as well as a hot bread and butter pud with custard, which I am proud to say, I walked past!

I chose several cakes including a delectable brownie, a lemon meringue mini tart, a coffee mousse, and a strawberry tart... no healthy fruit for me - I can eat fruit at home!

Back I went to our table, where I devoured these delicious morsels very quickly followed by a cup of coffee, all included in the price.

My partner of the evening did not go back for more desserts and for once I decided "enough is enough", but still could just not resist that urge to get up and eat something else. That is the trouble with myself and buffet - we have this love/hate relationship where I feel I must eat as the food is laid out there so nicely.

Off I went in search of what to have with my second cup of coffee, and there I found it... three different types of cheese including my favourite, Camembert. I was tempted to take another bread roll as I had half a one with dinner and they were delicious with sun-dried tomato through them. However, I took just one small cracker type biscuit to have with my cheese.

And then I finally stopped, feeling decidedly worse than when I had walked in... I keep vowing I will not go to buffet meals as I seem to pig-out, however there I was again - I can't resist the temptation of good food and lots of it.

Monterey' is in the Pan Pacific Hotel at 207 Adelaide Terrace, Perth. We found parking almost outside the hotel and you can read more about it here.
