Alkaline Water – Health Benefits and Less Known Uses

Alkaline water has become more and more popular and this is not without a reason. Its advocates claim that alkaline water boosts metabolism, reduces acidity in the blood, fortifies the immune system, speeds up the absorption of nutrients, and helps fight the aging process because of its antioxidant rich contents.

Health benefits

Causing cell damage, toxins are the main cause of the aging process. While we cannot avoid them entirely, we can try, at least, to reduce the intake and eliminate them from our body using natural detoxification methods like alkaline ionized water (AIW). Moreover, AIW contains higher concentrations of alkaline minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, which are vital for human health. With higher pH values than regular tap water, it helps the body stay in a healthy state, reducing blood acidity that represents a major cause for many adult diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Less known uses

Water ionizers typically yield 70% alkaline water you can drink and 30% acidic water you can use for other purposes. Read at least a few reviews of water ionizers before deciding which device is the best for you, then think about maximizing the benefits you can get from both types of water. The use of alkaline water is not new. Many Eastern cultures have used it for more than half a century. While, there are many health benefits deriving from the alkaline water's oral consumption, there are many uses you can give to it, and there are things you can do with the acidic ionized water as well.

You can add it to your smoothies to neutralize the acidity of the fruit, and actually make any use you make of the regular tap water. If used when cooking, AIW will bring out the best flavor. The flavors will be enhanced, the food will be tenderer and will need less seasoning. The vegetables will be much greener because chlorophyll is not broken. Acids are neutralized and thus the bitter side will be removed. When cooking noodles with alkaline water, you will realize it does not become pasty. The same goes for rice. The shell of eggs comes off easier when the water they were boiled in has a higher pH.

Acidic ionized water has an astringent effect and it will strengthen and soften your skin when used for washing. This is especially effective in the fight against pimples and rashes. It can also be useful against hair loss, itching, dandruff as well as for keeping your hair soft and non-sticky.

The use of acidic water within homemade remedies has been proved effective in the treatment of minor skin wounds and for killing the bacteria that causes oral malodor. Because of its invigorating effect, AIW can be used effectively for healing and reducing the itching of insect bites.

How to make alkaline water

There are several ways of obtaining alkaline water. One method refers to the use of additives like baking soda. You can add 600 mg of sodium bicarbonate to 0.25 liter of water to increase its alkaline properties. Shake the bottle or stir in the glass vigorously until the baking soda dissolves well. However, this is not a good solution if you are on a low salt or low-sodium diet. Another option, in such a case are the lemons. When you drink water that contains lemon juice, your body reacts to the lemon's anionic properties alkalizing the water you ingest. Cut a lemon into eight, put the lemon slices into the water and let them soak for a while before drinking the water.

While the home remedies can work wonders for your health, the most comfortable solution with the same health benefits are water ionizing devices. Fitted on your faucet, they are very easy to use. Water is electrically stimulated with two electrodes, one positive and one negative. Thus, the water is separated into alkaline water and acidic water.
