The Australian Ballet Company presents Alice‘s Adventures in Wonderland in Sydney and Melbourne. The Sydney performances will take place at the Capitol Theatre and the Melbourne performances will take place at the State Theatre, Arts Centre .

Everyone knows the 1865 story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, either from the novel or its many adaptations over the years. Enter the ballet interpretation from Christopher Wheeldon to take you back down the rabbit hole in 2024, where the tale has been made suitable for the whole family with all its eccentricities from the Queen of Hearts to magical food and drink. Wheeldon has taken the humour and eccentricities to create this performance, so you can watch as the Queen of Hearts rampages around her court, see the White Rabbit shimmy his tail as he is late, late for a very important date, and see the Caterpillar sparkling in pointe shoes, covered in crystals.

The 2018 production won the Helpmann Award for that year, as well as Best Female Dancer – Ako Kondo, and in the same year, it was nominated in four other categories: Best Choreography, Best Scenic Design, Best Music Direction, and Best Male - and this indicates that it will be a truly wonderful show that appeals to all ages - and that gives the story new life beyond what we know from the page and the many films and other adaptations. Watch in awe as Tony Award-winner designer Bob Crowley’s blending of high-tech wizardry marries traditional stagecraft to bring this fabulously nonsense tale to life, with magic, dancers, and puppetry with exquisite eye-catching elements of design. This is combined with an evocative score of Cheshire Cat purrs and ticking clocks from composer Joby Talbot.

During the Melbourne run, this exquisite ballet will be part of the farewell season at Melbourne’s State Theatre, and will temporarily relocate to Melbourne’s historic Regent Theatre while the State Theatre remains closed for renovations until 2027.

The ballet runs for 160 minutes with two intervals, and is appropriate for all ages, so is family-friendly. Guests are advised that due to the length, the performance is recommended for ages six and up, and everyone attending must have a ticket, even if children under two are sitting on your lap – a babe-in-arms ticket is free, and you can grab one from the box office on the day of the performance.

Ticket prices start at $66 - and will vary by the seat and performance. The best value for money will be a midweek matinee and evening performances - check your chosen venue for any updated information about tickets and performances.
