I saw Alice's Adventures in Wonderland when it was playing in Brisbane in the beginning of March, and it was absolutely spectacular.
Everything from the music to the costumes, sets and dancers goes above and beyond expectations. I love ballet and I also love watching musical theatre but I have to say that this particular ballet was above and beyond anything I have seen before. There was so much love and effort put into this performance that everything you could possibly imagine was put into the show. It runs for a hefty 2 hours and 40 minutes but it is a true rendition of Lewis Carroll's book with nothing skimped or skimmed over.
As soon as the show starts, you are captivated by the story and the immersive experience. At every moment, there is intricate detail in the sets and the costumes that it really sucks you into the magic of wonderland and it brings the whole show to the next level. I was surprised at all the little features added to the costumes and props that really made you feel like you were part of the world, and so much of the magic that was brought to the stage left me thinking "How did they do that?" as if I had bought tickets to a magic show instead of a ballet.
The Cheshire Cat, there's more to him than it may seem...
I don't want to reveal too many of the techniques and tricks used by the show to create the Wonderland illusions as it really is much more magnificent to see it first hand and be surprised at every turn. I can tell you now, you may think you know every trick in the book, but this show will still do something to surprise you. It was really well thmarvellouslynd marvelously executed.
Growing, shrinking, you simply won't believe your eyes when you see how they pull this off!
My friend and I genuinely could not wait for the performance to re-start at every interval as we were so eager to see what happens next. The dancers were all so graceful and I loved watching them bring the characters to life, even without words the characters personalities shone through and it was a delight to watch the antics play out on stage.
I will admit as someone who usually attend shows on a strict budget the tickets can be a little pricey, but it is well worth the cost, if anything I felt like I should have been paying more than I did to see a show of such caliber.
I would strongly recommend this show, and would go again if given the chance. It truly is a once in a lifetime performance that you must see or you'll regret it. This is an excellent showcase of the amazing work done by the Australian Ballet.
This ballet is coming to Melbourne on the 8th-22nd of June at the Arts Centre Melbourne.
