Alice in Wonderland: Off with his Head! Fringe World 2016 - Review
Fri 05 Feb 2016 - Sat 06 Feb 2016
Alice in Wonderland: Off with his Head! is a quirky take on the classic Alice in Wonderland tale. The most obvious difference is that the gender roles have been reversed, however there are many imaginative spins on various aspects of the story.
We were ushered in to find "Alice" lying in wait for us. In this case, Alice isn't quite the person you'd expect, but you may initially be fooled by the luxuriant flowing hair. Soon enough, things spring into action, and we enjoyed a show with some great costumes and make-up. Of course, cabaret performances such as this rely on a wide range of artistic skills, and this show certainly delivers. The burlesque routines are cheeky and imaginative, while staying true to the genre. The dancing is top class, and the acrobatics are excellent.
This show didn't miss a beat from the moment it began. It was engaging and entertaining throughout, and even the small things such as the way the props were collected in between each act are done in character and add to the performance. The fact that it's a familiar story helped the audience to engage with the narrative, as well as providing a way of highlighting the creative differences that were introduced.
There are two more performances on the 5th and the 6th of February, and if you like cabaret then you should thoroughly enjoy this show. Tickets are available here
