Alice Fraser brings her show 'ETHOS' to the 2018 Melbourne International Comedy Festival at the Chinese Museum, on now until 22 April. Book your tickets here

Alice is a quadruple threat - intelligent, articulate, funny and beautiful and she presents a show with a solid philosophy, well-researched content, which explores what it means to be human.

Not a light nor easy topic.

Held in the exquisite Chinese Museum, surrounded by bronze warriors and dragons, 'ETHOS' is an intelligent, complex, and clever show.



Alice reflects on a story from Jewish folklore 'Golem' – an inanimate being made from clay, who is brought to life by 'Ethos', the Greek word for 'character' or 'habits'. According to Aristotle, there are three types of 'Ethos' which shape our morals, behaviour and our ability to influence others and bring good to the world.

Starting from a blank slate, Alice animates 'ETHOS' her Artificial Intelligence friend from binary code and starts a dialogue about what it means to be human. Eerily, ETHOS voice sounds a little like Stephen Hawkins, which is also fitting, as she moves back and forth linking historical narratives to our contemporary existence.

Alice tests her understanding of humanity using 'ETHOS' as the 'lab monkey'. Together they explore the old and new worlds of culture, gender and sexual harassment. The audience is invited to sing an anthem in defiance of sexual harassment of women, particularly performers. Alice also tells entertaining stories about everyday racism and how she took a stand it in a petrol station.



Alice Fraser's ETHOS is like a lighthouse in the tsunami of comedy shows you could see at this year's festival. Her use of puns, satire, and eloquence is beyond compare to anything I've seen in a while - and I am grateful that good intellectual comedy is back on the circuit.
