From the intense opening scene with its rooftop chase, a police officer plunging towards the ground and haunting music score, you'll be as gripped as James Stewart whose character grabs and grips the ledge of the crumbling roof several stories above the street below where the police officer now lies, motionless.

Vertigo - an Alfred Hitchcock classic - is the story of an acrophobic former detective, Scottie, who, having resigned from his job following an accident on the job, accepts the assignment of investigating the strange activities of an old friend's wife, Madeleine, becoming dangerously obsessed with her in the process. Madeleine believes she is the reincarnation of a woman who died many years ago and her husband is concerned about her welfare and sanity. Scottie follows and observes Madeleine, rescuing her from what appears to be a suicide attempt when she jumps into San Francisco bay. During the assignment, Scottie becomes close to Madeleine, ultimately falling in love with her. What he does not suspect is the part he is playing in an intricate murder plot and being hoodwinked into acting as an accomplice to a murder.

James (Jimmy) Stewart plays the detective, John 'Scottie' Ferguson, with Kim Novak playing the old friend's wife, Madeleine, and Barbara Bel Geddes playing the detective's best friend, Midge. A great cast who each portray complex characters through their romantic obsessions, fears, manipulation, madness and lies.

The movie, in true Hitchcock style, delivers an intense and suspenseful psychological thriller that is as impactful today as it was when it was made in 1958. Vertigo was named the best film of all time by the 2012 British Film Institute and has appeared repeatedly in best film polls by the American Film Institute.
