There is a rose garden, a very beautiful rose garden in a very strange place, it is in the very suburban Baulkham Hills, on a very suburban street, right behind a council pool and right next to an athletics field. The Hills Shire (otherwise known as the Garden Shire), maintains this beautiful garden and if you want to see over 100 varieties and almost 1000 rose plants in full bloom you should head out to the Hills right now!

The Alfred Henry Whaling Memorial Reserve Rose Garden was established in 1972. To local residents it is known as the Roxborough Park Rose Garden due to its location on Roxborough Park Road. It occupies over 8000 square meters of land and is apparently the largest of its kind in the Sydney region. Roses of all colours, varieties and sizes occupy this fragrant garden and even if you aren't a rose fancier you will be astonished at the beautiful scene that awaits you when you arrive in suburbia.

The garden is terraced into four levels with slate stairs and little pathways taking you between each terrace. Beautiful old palm trees border the garden from the road, providing the garden with privacy. This in turn makes the garden a popular location for wedding ceremonies and other functions such as Shakespeare in the Roses.

There is a rotunda and seats scattered throughout the garden for you to sit and appreciate the beauty of all the roses. There is also a lovely lawn area that would be perfect for a picnic or romantic rendezvous. In saying that, all of you wannabe Casanovas should not pick the roses under any circumstances, that is very much frowned upon by locals!

For those of you with a passion for roses and their varieties and scents, each rose bed in the garden has a wee sign post advising you of the variety and colour of the rose. There are floribunda, hybrid tea, grandiflora and climbing roses to name but a few. Rose lovers will appreciate every rose on its own as well as en masse, as would anyone visiting this gorgeous garden.

The rose garden is located right behind the Waves Aquatic Centre in Baulkham Hills. This council owned facility has both an Olympic sized swimming pool, indoor pool and toddlers fun pool. A cafe and gym are also incorporated into the centre. Next to the pool is a playground and also the premier athletics field in the Hills district. Each Saturday morning you will find children of all ages participating in the local Little Athletics competition. If you decide to visit with your family they can occupy themselves at the pool or the playground whilst you are enjoying the sights and scents of the garden.

Spring is the season when roses are at their blooming best, so as the season is upon us, as is some very hot weather, I suggest you pop on out to Baulkham Hills very soon and as they say, take the time to stop and smell the roses.
