Accommodation in a Walled City

Situated in the popular walled city of Cartagena, Colombia is a complete array of South American flavour. From the colourful architecture of buildings, to fresh ceviche, to robust period style doors and of course the market holders, out to make a few pesos selling gorgeous local products and your signature knock-offs. Among this inner city wonderland, are a collection of boutique hotels hidden behind rustic doors. One such hotel is the Alfiz Boutique Hotel, located on Carrera 5, which allows its guests to escape the hustle of the paved streets, to an inner city oasis of flora, literature a jacuzzi and a plunge pool.

I had the pleasure of heading over to this much loved South American city with my partner, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The Alfiz was booked as a last relaxation point, before our departure, myself to reality in Australia and my partner to the Amazon jungle.

The exterior of the Alfiz is much like that of the surrounding up-market auberge, but inside is a historic display of pure class; with high ceilings, tiled floors, hidden garden pockets and ornaments collected from history adorning the walls and mantel pieces. Meticulous detail has been placed into all aspects of the Alfiz Boutique Hotel.
Entry into our room was with a heavy engraved key (which reception is happy to hold when you leave the premises for the day/evening). Each of the eight thematic rooms at the Alfiz Boutique Hotel gives a unique feel and guests a visual display of that period of time. The Independence Room, the accommodation we were granted access for our stay, was a room dedicated to those men that fought on November 1811 to gain absolute independance for Cartagena from Spain. After this attack, the liberator Simon Bolivar, gave the name 'Heroic City' to Cartagena.

The split level room was a sight for sore eyes, a gorgeous bath and a large sofa adorned the entry, along with a staircase up to a double bed. Keeping to the thematic ambiance in many ways throughout the accommodation, the modern facilities of an air-conditioning unit and TV were appreciated, however safe to say in a historic city like Cartagena, the TV was not viewed at all. The split level room was a different experience for me and really allowed one to relax in the bath, whilst the other was able to have a nap upstairs.

We were lucky to have our room situated in front of the plunge pool of the hotel. It almost felt like we had our own private pool. Because of the 'walled' nature of the boutique hotel, this area only saw sun from about 10-11am daily. After this duration, it is best to head on up to the balcony and enjoy the sun from the roof. There are no lifts in this hotel, just a gorgeous spiral hardwood staircase that lead all the way up to a jacuzzi. The jacuzzi is for guests and is prepared within a 15 minute to 30 minute window with the help of the friendly reception staff. Covered with a canaopy of white curtains, it is the perfect mini oasis in the busy central city.

As part of our package we were entitled to a welcome drink, which was a refreshing sangria, as well as a gourmet breakfast every morning. Breakfast was from 7-10am and comprised of fruit platters, bread and pastry baskets, eggs, bacon, parmesan and an array local feasts. Safe to say this type of banquet every morning set us up for a productive day of sight seeing and exploring.

The staff were extremely helpful and always made us feel very welcome. If you have money to spend and are after a boutique five star stay in the popular city of Colombia, then the Alfiz Boutique Hotel is the place for you.
