A boutique hotel, with a range of differences from mainstream hotels, the was designed to encourage guests to come out of their rooms and into the inviting and comfy communal areas.

Their philosophy is, rooms are for sleeping and communal spaces are for living. To achieve this goal, residential interior designers were enlisted to give the common areas a warm and inviting feel, creating an atmosphere similar to being in a friend's home.

The Alex hotel is centrally located in the cultural heart of Perth, surrounded by the funky bars and restaurants of Northbridge. It's in the perfect location to explore Perth city or Northbridge on a city getaway and it's on the doorstep of Perth's Cultural Centre, so it's easy to take in a show, museum or gallery nearby. If you need to be close to the city for work or Perth Central train station to travel in or out of the city, the hotel is in the perfect spot.
My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at the Alex hotel over a weekend and loved this new (opened in May 2015) and quirky hotel. From the moment we arrived we appreciated the relaxed feel. The check in desk was nestled in the open cafe area of the first floor and the staff welcomed us warmly and provided information on many of the local places to eat and explore. Once settled into our room we were drawn to the lounges which have an extensive range of magazines, coffee table books and novels to peruse. There was great music playing but there was also a record player if you preferred to choose your own music. You can't get more homely than that.

Some of the usual (possibly superfluous) features of a hotel have been omitted at the Alex, however, in their place they have added some unique and welcome features that are possibly more appreciated. The rooms have comfy beds, luxurious Italian linen and scrumptious local Sodashi toiletries.

Our room had a balcony and the coolest ensuite that featured a windowed wall on one side of the shower that looked out on to the balcony for streams of light and an electric blind for privacy. Super unique and funky.

There are no desks in the rooms or (mediocre) tea and coffee making facilities or mini bars. However the Alex has an innovative honour bar in one of the lounge areas where you can help yourself to complimentary filtered coffee or a great choice of teas, or grab a beer or pour yourself a glass of wine or a soft drink from their extensive range. As the honour bar description indicates, just write down your purchase to be charged to your bill.

You can enjoy your drink in the comfy lounge area or on the spectacular roof top terrace garden with a great view of the city and surrounds.

A delicious complimentary continental breakfast is included with each night's stay. We found the spread was spectacular and scrumptious. There were a choice of cereals, good quality yogurt and artisan breads to toast or eat fresh with delicious spreads. But the highlight for us was the selection of freshly baked sweet and savoury muffins that were absolutely delicious and moreish. Tea and coffee are available or you can order a latte or cappacino from the in-house cafe.

Other welcome features the Alex offers are free Wifi and free in-house movies in the bedrooms on the modern 40" smart TVs which can also pair with your mobile device to watch or listen to your own content. 12 o'clock check out is standard but later check out may be arranged if required.

We enjoyed making the most of the free bikes the Alex offers. Armed with our helmets and locks we explored the local area and grabbed a bite to eat along Beaufort Street.
