Fun For All The Family
We just had a lovely family weekend away in the Sunshine Coast. We had been to Mooloolaba before and wanted to head back to take the kids to Underwater World, however being on a very tight budget we needed to find somewhere to stay that was safe and comfortable, close to everything and very reasonably priced.
Not that easy, but after some research, I found Alex Beach Cabins and Tourist Park which was the perfect find. It had plenty of stuff on site to keep the kids entertained, was walking distance to a few local beaches, shops and restaurants plus it was rustic enough to be like the traditional family camping break that we wanted.
Hotels are great but they can often lack character and with children there is nothing better than going back to basics - within reason, I'm not mad - so rather than actually camping we had all the mod cons in a cute little en-suite queen cabin. They offer a variety of accommodation to suit couples, families and large groups - you can choose from camping pitches, villas, family homes and cabins.
Our cabin was small but had everything we needed. It had one separate bedroom with queen bed, air con, wardrobes, draws and dressing table plus a lounge area with bunk beds and TV and DVD player, a shower and sink, toilet, kitchen area, fridge and freezer, dining table and chairs and small outdoor decking with recliners. It was clean and everything was working well.
There is loads of kitchen stuff available to use including pots and pans, glasses and mugs, cutlery and a kettle, toaster and microwave. It was all clean and well looked after too. There is coffee, tea, milk and sugar to use, plus a little starter pack of cleaning and washing up things. The shower was great as even though small, it had a deep basin so using the plug our girls could still have their usual evening bath.
On site they have a heated pool with a few chairs and sunbeds, an enclosed playground, a small games room and huge BBQ area for up to 40 people, laundry, amenities block and reception.
Having young kids I was slightly worried there would be noise at night as there did seem to be a few young sports teams staying there - but it was peaceful and quiet, which was great. The pool got quite busy mid afternoon, but in the morning and around lunchtime it was fairly quiet.
Staff were friendly and welcoming - you are provided with towels, bedding and blankets when you arrive, you just need to pay a $20 key deposit which you get back when you check out.
Locally there is so much to do with both Alexandra Headland and Maroochydore beaches within walking distance, and Mooloolaba Beach about a 25 minutes walk along the beach front. In Mooloolaba you have the brilliant Underwater World, which the kids loved, plus loads of shopping, cafés, bars and restaurants. Just outside the tourist park you have a huge park and playground opposite with BBQ areas and lots of space for kids to play safely. For the grown ups there is the Alex Beach Surf Club and a number of cafés, bars and restaurants just a short stroll away.
Located on Okinja Road just off Alexandra Parade, it was roughly about a two hour drive from the Gold Coast. It was simple to find as only 200 metres from the beach and well signposted. They have pretty comprehensive directions on the website too.
A great place to stay with kids, from around $80 to $125 per night, for two adults. Highly recommended for a fun family getaway by the beach, that won't break the bank. Give them a call to get a great deal - we shall definitely be going back again.
