Sorry if 'disabled' is not the politically correct term but I am referring to those with mobility issues who want beach access just to see the sand and surf, to relax and enjoy the soothing rhythm of the waves. A search of beaches with wheelchair clearly demonstrates that Alex is a nation-wide rare gem that allows ready beach access at several levels.

Council has constructed metal access ramps, some specifically for disabled access. These metal structures keep traffic off the sand dunes in order to preserve our fragile beachfront. But some and in particular the one directly opposite Okinga Road have a purpose built ramp and ample room for several chairs or mobility scooters to park plus benches for friends to join them.

For those with 4-wheel drive chairs or a super fit attendant Alex boasts three sturdy concrete ramps. One next to the lifesaver's tower, another directly in front of the surf club – just behind the bright boards - and a third just beyond the skate park. Mooloolaba also has a ramp by their tower and the Spit Boardwalk for those with electric chairs or that robust attendant.

My new friend with MS highlighted the treat that they offered. And these ramps also allow those with walking frames, chairs or scooters. All can enjoy a pleasant space in the sun to sit and watch the surf, sand and beach life without the chore of ploughing through the sand.

I am so glad that they can share this coastal delight with us.
