Amidst all the retro chic of the West End, you could be forgiven for thinking Alec's old fashioned shopfront is some gentrified fakery targeting the hipster dollar.

But not so – Alec's traditional barbershop feel is as authentic as they come.

Located at 24 Leigh St - just off Hindley – the exterior features dainty cream columns and a sign painted with the red and white barbershop poles of yesteryear.

Inside, banter cultivated from 37 years of business reverberates off walls bristling with sporting paraphernalia.

Alec, the namesake of the place and owner since the very beginning, still cuts hair and jokes around with regulars who have been coming here for decades.

Conversations flit back and forth between English and Italian, and the bi-cultural feel of the place is reflected in the local and Mediterranean hair products available for sale.

The cuts themselves are pretty no nonsense, but with 37 years experience under his belt, Alec has a fair idea of what he's doing.

The man gets up nice and early to open at 7:30am six days a week, so he obviously loves what he does.

Bookings can be made, but its quite acceptable to just rock up and join the queue of regulars sitting up against the back wall waiting their turn.

Price: $18 for mens, and Alec will also do women's hair for the same price.

Opening hours: Mon – Thurs 7:30am – 5:30pm

Fri 7:30am-6:00pm

Sat: 7:30am – 12 Noon
