I'm a freelance writer living in the beautiful river town of Mannum in South Australia dreaming of the day I can retire from the 9-5 to write full-time.

Combining chemistry and cuisine
The Alchemy Cafe in Gawler is not easy to spot at first, but although it's tucked away just off the Adelaide Road behind Pizza Hut, this little cafe with its somewhat plain exterior has a lot to offer.
Upon entering, you're greeted by a funky rustic/modern interior and friendly, welcoming staff. The walls are adorned with beautiful local art and the space is light and roomy. My family and I called in for a birthday celebration lunch with children in tow and found it a pleasant experience for all. As well as the dining area there are comfy couches where you can sit and enjoy a coffee.
Open every day from 9am till 3pm, the cafe specialises in organic, sustainable and ethically-sourced fare with something to please everyone. I ordered the chickpea patties, while my sister and daughter went with vegetarian burger and salad. The prices were more than fair and the ambience was fresh, relaxed and informal.
Mignon has managed the cafe for around five months and finds that word-of-mouth is her best marketing tool. She has big plans this year to extend the cafe to incorporate a 'soup and smoothie bar' called Liquid Alchemy where patrons will be able to stop in and pick up a takeaway lunch, leaving the main area for sit-down meals.
