If you're interested in the mineral history of Broken Hill, then visiting Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum is a must. The geocentre has a significant collection of minerals including its 42-kilogram silver nugget which contains almost-pure native silver. This nugget was found filling a fault cavity at the nearby Junction Mine.
The Silver Tree, purchased by Charles Rasp, is another impressive exhibit. Crafted from more than eight kilograms of pure silver, this table centrepiece indeed showcases the skill of Adelaide jeweller Henry Steiner. It had been displayed at various exhibitions before finding its home here in the museum.
Feel free to take your time exploring Broken Hill's unique geology and learning all about the Line of Lode that made the city's fortune. The museum is located on the corner of Crystal and Bromide Streets. Opening hours are from 10am to 4pm every day except Sundays and Mondays. Entry is by a donation.
