Most of us would look at a cold, dark, disused corner of a basement and shudder, wanting to get out of there as soon as possible.
Not so for Sebastian Goldspink, Founder and Director of
Alaska Projects, Creative Spaces, a Sydney based Artist Run Initiative established in November 2011 who's aim was to bring art into disused spaces. And so he has, transforming this underground haunting place into a quirky exhibition space. The epitome of a creative idea.
What started as an obsession with this small cold dark space in a basement car park is now an ongoing gallery/exhibition space which has hosted several shows featuring over 40 artists with over 5000 visitors.
Only a creative mind could have foreseen the potential of this abandoned mechanics office in the basement of a Kings Cross Carpark.
Not limited to the old basement office space, The Car Park project has been designed to extend beyond that initial area into other parts of the car park including stairwells, elevators and common areas. Cool. I know this car park well and it was definitely a soulless place before Sebastian came along and turned drab into something worth going to, other than just to park your car.
Find out about upcoming exhibitions and current events by visiting their
Facebook page . There is always something happening or showing.
The space is also host to the
Alaska Cinema Club which is set up in the basement car park. The program is available
