A new take on the much beloved story of Aladdin, this story brings a whole new cast of characters along with some originals for a true night of family fun.
Presented by Ellenbrook Theatre Company, this story pits Aladdin (Giordarna Rigoli) and Princess Jasmine (Bryony Oliver) in Peking, China where they become the pawns in evil Abanazar's scheme to get the magic lamp. New characters are introduced such as Aladdin's mother Widow Twankey (Peter Boylen), their laundry boy Wishee Washee (Gerran Turner) and his pet monkey Nobby (Aryan Menon). The Emperor (Nick Stamos), and two police officers Ping and Pong (Jack Hammon and Tim Ward) provide sublime comic relief in a production full of comic characters.
The show opens with old Abanazar (Richard Hadler) telling the audience about his evil plans to steal the magic lamp. This pantomime is full of character interaction for the children and hidden jokes for the adults as well as bright coloured costumes, large dance sequences and plenty of songs to enjoy.
Some scenes, although enjoyable, ran slowly and extended the finishing time; this was a problem as I saw at least two young families leave the venue during the second half. This could be rectified by shortening scenes or shortening intermission times to cater for patrons with very young children.
The set, costumes and lights were just as expected for a pantomime; bright and punchy. I extend congratulations to these departments on this excellent feat. Unfortunately, due to lighting black outs during scene changes, shadows of cast members could be seen to be illuminated by blue lamps off stage which caused a few giggles from various audience members.
Directed by Suzanne Perry, this pantomime is a lot of fun for the whole family. I would note that although the show starts at 7:30pm, it may not end until 10pm so perhaps keep this in mind if you have very young children. This show runs from the 19th to the 22nd of December at Ellenbrook Performing Arts Centre.
