To those ones who are always eager to taste the local food on their city tours, I would recommend
Al Monastero, a typical and historical restaurant in the centre of
Cividale Del Friuli. I dropped by with a group of young people, who were visiting the region and all of us have enjoyed the food.
First of all, a special mention goes to the location and its interiors. Once a shelter to men returning from hunts and looking for a meal, now the venue has been restored in detail. Hence, the old medieval atmosphere is still present among the walls painted with hunting icons. The wooden ceilings complete the ambience, together with the old fireplace.
The owners of the restaurant are also owners of vineyard and this feature is well reflected upon through the wines selection and traditional tableware.
I suggest spending two minutes of your time before having your meal to read the whole history of the restaurant (now offering some accommodation options).
It is nice and very well presented. Even though the courses were just three (and sufficient), the winning dishes were the Risotto cooked with Ribolla Gialla – a typical Friulian white wine – with sprinkles of smoked ricotta;
ans gelato with pieces of gubana – the typical cake of Friuli which I described in my review of
Cividale).
Speaking of wine, we had a delicious merlot which was produced by restaurant owners based in Prepotto and called "La Buse dal Lof" (Friulian for 'the wolf's nest')
