I find it hard to beat a good Japanese meal - to me, it's clean food, nutritious & refreshing. Recently I enjoyed sampling the menu at South Wharf's
Akachochin Japanese restaurant for the first time.
When it first opened in 2013 Akachochin was named the best sushi restaurant and one of the hottest new restaurants in Melbourne in the Age Good Food Guide Awards.
Named after the red pepper lanterns which traditionally hang outside izakayas, traditional Japanese dining places,
Akachochin Head Chef Hitoshi Yoshida oversees the preparation of some of the best Japanese food in Melbourne while venue manager Eriko Kono, who has worked in some of Melbourne's best Japanese restaurants, including Nobu, ensures that everything that comes to the table meets the expectations of the customer.
Seated at the marble sushi bar or adjacent tables, you'll find Japanese cuisine served with a modern twist – small dishes in the traditional izakaya style.
Along with great food, Akachochin serves 50 different varieties of sake and a range of Japanese and local beer and wine.
The restaurant is open daily from Midday to 10pm and prices are very reasonable. For example, afternoon grazing platters served daily between 3pm and 6pm offer a range of hot & cold dishes priced from $7 to $19.
The Akachochin Tasting Menu at $66 per person offers six specialty dishes served to share and a Sake Pairing matches a variety of sake with six courses for just $30 per person.
A platter of assorted nigiri sushi (10 pieces) or assorted sashimi (9 pieces) cost $33 each.
Check out the website at www.akachochin.com.au for full details and pricing of the very extensive lunch, afternoon grazing, dinner and drinks menus.
If you're a lover of traditional Japanese food or perhaps keen to try it for the first time South Wharf's very izakaya, is the place for you.
