An American airstream caravan
Experience life in a great American airstream caravan tucked away in the township of Bright, Victoria. With Mount Buffalo only half an hour away, this makes for a great adventure.
Retro Airstream Caravan The unique accommodation in Bright's township is a part of American history; it belonged to an American family who used to take it down to Yosemite National Park. This tradition went on for 20 years or so until it was purchased and brought down to Melbourne by its current owners Shireen and Michael.
Staying in the airstream makes you wonder how it would have been back in the day, driving your family to an American national park. How many people could say they've stayed in an airstream that travelled to Yosemite! At present the airstream sits on a lush lawn, meters away from the Ovens River and just a few minutes drive from the town.
The striking body shape and its rounded polished aluminium coachwork enhances its luxurious feel. Once inside you feel like you've travelled back in time, a time when life was simple and Polaroids were the closest thing to Instagram.
The other feeling we got was complete cosiness, the clean and retro interior of the airstream was so inviting that we didn't want to leave. You'll have all amenities on hand which include a fridge/freezer, microwave and an oven. Also provided are complimentary toiletries and high-quality linen provided (with electric blanket).
The cherry on the cake is the TV/DVD with a collection of the latest DVDs choose from, with the likes of Deadpool and What We Do In The Shadows. Watching a movie with a bottle of wine is a perfect way to spend the night. The heating will keep you warm if it gets nippy at night, or you could sit outside on the private deck near the campfire.
A prominent feature of the airstream is that it is in close proximity to Mt Hotham, Falls Creek and Mt Buller, which is the closest to bright. It will take about 45 minutes to an hour to reach to The Horn lookout at Mt Buffalo.
Shireen and Michael are delightful hosts and made our stay feel very pleasant, they were very helpful with giving us information about the surrounding area and the rich history about Mt Buffalo. I'll definitely visit the airstream again during autumn when Bright turns into a magical spectacle.
HOW TO GET THERE When you reach Bright's township from Melbourne, continue straight for a about 5-7 minutes. On your left will be Racecourse Road, it's after Tyntynder Lane and the Ski Hire shop. Drive down Racecourse Road and the Airstream is on your left. (refer map)
It looks quite swish inside but look at the length of it. I'm guessing it was quite a challenge to tow and it puts me in mind of the 1954 comedy, 'The Long, Long Trailer' with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz although the van in the movie was not the iconic Airstream.
