Airpanas Angseri – Hot Springs
If you're the type of person that wants to see the "real side of Bali". Get off the beaten track. Or hang out where the locals go; then this is the place for you.
It's located in the centre of Bali and we needed to drive about 1.5hrs to get there from Sanur. The surrounding area is stunning and you'll get lots of typical Bali style views. I'm talking rolling rice paddy terraces, roads lined with colourful bamboo sticks called penjors and music-filled temples.
When you arrive, there's plenty of parking for both cars and mopeds. You need to make your way behind the sign pictured above and to the left of it. There are a number of steps up to the ticket booth. To the side of the ticket booth, there's a small warung with basic snacks and drinks. With your ticket walk to the right and through the well-paved jungle path. This was quite an enjoyable short walk and we even spotted two monkeys. After about 100 yards take the steps down to the right. Along the way, you'll pass a few restaurants which offer good value food and stunning views.
Make your way down the steps and you'll find the first hot spring pool. Again there's another basic cafe and also facilities. But don't just stop there.
If you continue to your right there's a row of private buildings. Each one has its own private hot springs pool and can be rented for 15,000 IDR for 30 minutes. We didn't do this as I thought they were too small and slightly dark inside.
At the end of these buildings are some changing rooms and a basic shower (bucket style). And just beyond them is the final bigger pool.
Depending on when you get there you could have a very peaceful jungle swim with a small waterfall in the background like we did when we arrived. However, after about 10 minutes the pool was descended upon by 3 large families which made us wish we had taken the private pool house option.
Also, worth a mention is the fact that with it being a local place, off the tourist route, most ladies wore tops and leggings in the pool. It's up to you but just worth saying so that you don't feel uncomfortable. Also, the cafes only take cash.
Personally, I would say that this venue is best visited as part of a bigger tour. Or perhaps if you are staying around an hours drive away. In our case we drove a 3 hour round trip and only really had about 1 hour there – including swimming, changing and a snack.
If you happen to use Google maps to find this location please be sure that you don't follow the route right to the end. You need to turn left before you reach the end of the road. We went all the way to the end of the road and then turned left and had a hard time getting the car turned around and back up the hill!
Let me know what you think of this location when you visit.
