Event:
Pop to the Pop Up Market with Wesley Mission
Mental illness, is, in its rawest terms, debilitating. For many, the struggle with a mental illness is real and excruciatingly painful. Mix that with social isolation, homelessness, physical or mental disability and sadly, you have some extremely challenging situations and a potential disconnect from society. Wesley Mission has been working hard to combat that disconnect and bridge the gap between those facing adversity and their community.

Art from the Margins (AFTM), an initiative of the Wesley Mission, supports, promotes and exhibits the work of artists living with one or many of these adversities. On Saturday 23rd November AFTM will be presenting its latest exhibition AFTM goes POP! at the AFTM Gallery and Studios in Fortitude Valley. The exhibition celebrates and showcases Pop Art themed visual art including a mixture of painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and digital media. Pop Art truly is a unique, distinctive and recognisable genre even to those of us who are a little more artistically challenged (soup cans anyone?).

AFTM has been operating since 2008. The idea was first conceived right here in Brisbane in support of homeless artists. In an effort to foster the relationships between the community and those living with disadvantages, AFTM was born. Using creativity as an emotional outlet, the artists showcasing their work share their organically raw and real tales through their pieces. The event runs parallel with Social Inclusion Week, focused on closing the gaps between those suffering from physical and mental isolation and their community.

Interested in art, but want to have a shop too? You're in luck - not only will you get to see the art exhibition, but there will also be a Pop-up market which will feature a broad range of artworks and merchandise for sale. You may even be able to tick a few things off your Christmas present shopping list all sales go directly to the AFTM artists so you can make a consciously positive decision to support local artists.

So come on down and join in on the fun at this vibrant community event, official exhibition opening and market day. Kicking off at 10am, the event is free and open to one and all. You will find AFTM Gallery & Studios at 136 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley. The event runs until 4pm.

A very worthy program. I visited something similar in Sale in Victoria earlier in the year. Hopefully it not only assists the artists themselves but will show the wider community that people with mental illness are not out for the count but can still be talented contributors to society.
