In 1883, when The Hotel Windsor in Melbourne began serving traditional high tea, there would have been very few fine ladies and gentlemen looking for a guide to high tea etiquette the way I was a few days ago, preparing for my visit. Tip: don't raise your pinkie. Really.

The luxury hotel in Melbourne welcomes you with an elaborate foyer, lush with fresh flowers and alight with the melodies of a harpist strumming. Serving its renowned afternoon teas on silver three tiered stands, the freshly baked scones are served with jam and cream; exquisite pastries sit above delicate finger sandwiches. A glass of French sparkling is served on arrival, and an extensive selection of specialty teas and coffees are brought to your table throughout the afternoon.

On weekends, guests enjoy an indulgent dessert buffet, crepe station, and chocolate fountain.

Vegetarian and gluten free options can be catered for at no extra cost, (advise any dietary requirements at the time of booking). Myself and a guest enjoyed a fine assortment of gluten free options, at no extra cost, and at no loss of quality, texture, and crumb the way some gluten free alternatives are predisposed to.

The Hotel Windsor serves Afternoon Tea in the signature Melbourne hotel restaurant, 111 Spring Street, every day of the week.

Afternoon Tea Sitting Times & Prices
Monday-Friday: 12 noon and 2:30pm: $69 per person, children aged 3-6 years $25, aged 7-12 years $40

Saturday and Sunday:12 noon and 2:30pm: $89 per person (includes an indulgent dessert buffet), children aged 3-6 years $30, aged 7-12 years $50

Indulgent Dessert Buffet

"Enjoy a selection of gateaux and pastries inspired by our 130 year heritage. The dessert buffet features a range of classic and modern desserts such as lemon meringue pie, chocolate tart, and cheesecakes. A highlight not to miss is the decadent chocolate fountain" (we didn't miss it, and it was, indeed, decadent).

Includes tea, coffee, and a complimentary glass of French sparkling wine

The table linens were crisp, the French wine was sparking, and the tea was kept hot and topped up throughout our luxurious two hour lingering nibble session. Pip pip, cheerio.

Seriously, the BEST high tea ever! I went there last year for my birthday and I ended up with the biggest macaroon-food-baby. An added bonus was that they were late getting everyone the food, so they gave everyone unlimited bubbles to make up for it!

I like how they've added some interesting twists to the traditional sandwiches you get. Lemon Curd with scones also sounds nice.

I would also recommend the Grand Hyatt High Tea (with buffet - available on weekends). It is slightly cheaper but equally good food.
