There's something decadent about an afternoon tea. It conjures up a sense of royalty. It's a totally indulgent meal that the peasants can't afford… they are after all slaving away preparing fine food for the elite. I love an afternoon tea by an open fire when it's cold or sipping on a long cold mocktail when it's hot. Anytime is a great time for arvo tea… and if it's late enough I might even get out of cooking dinner. Here's some of my favourite spots for afternoon tea. Bon Appetite.

Sweet Temptations Partisserie
%%10/214 Aquaduct Rd, St Helena
94386141%%

Sweet Temptations Partisserie is famous for their melt in your mouth cakes and large selection of biscuits. But it's hard to choose between the layered mousse cake, a flourless orange the Bailey's, berry or caramelised cheesecake. Not into cakes? Try Sweet Temptations' strudels, tarts, pastries danishes, quiche or pies and tasty gluten free treats. In a newly renovated premises, just across from Woolworths, there's always a few minutes for a coffee and cake.

Jam and Cream Cafe and Gift Shop
1 Orr St, Heidelberg Heights
9457 3356

Think afternoon tea… think Jam and Cream Café . But don't be misled by the cleverness of the décor, the best thing about Jam and Cream Cafe is definitely the scones. For the uninitiated, they have an unbelievable total of sixteen varieties of scones. Last time we went we had a sample selection of 10 miniature scones. Actually they were not very small but it was a great way to try out a range of scones.

I'm sure the rest of the cakes made on site are equally good but there's still more scones I want to sample. They couldn't be any fresher. They are made fresh when you order and then served straight out of the oven.

There are plenty of tables and chairs out the front, up the sideway and out the back you can eat in nana's pink caravan. It's not on a main road but tucked away near a discount shoe shop (an added bonus). Keep looking.

Cube at the Heights - Cafe & Wine Bar
%%1/285 Diamond Creek Road Plenty
94356381%%

You may have noticed this unusual building that looks like a stack of geometric shapes piled up on top of each other. I always ogle over their cakes and biscuits. As an admirer of cakes I often see the same ones around the traps. The Cube has some unique cakes and biscuits all freshly hand made daily from a small bakery. They look great, are served beautifully and taste great too. They also have a wood fire oven for pizza lovers.

Cacao
%%1st floor, Kiosk 107, 619 Doncaster Rd, Westfield Doncaster
Phone: 03 9840 2269%%

Strategically located where most people have to walk past in a busy stretch of the Doncaster shopping centre,
you cannot miss the display of individually hand made Cacoa chocolates. The chocolates are truly a work of art. The cheapest individual mouth sized chocolate treat is $2. With their range of sweets and treats I am surprised that the Salted Caramel Macaroon is the most popular purchase. If you can't find something that you would love to have for afternoon tea with your coffee you are a bit fussy. Check out their freshly baked pastries, macaroons, savouries, baguettes and delicious cakes.

Carlucci's Italian Restaurant Bar and Cafe
%%134 James St, Templestowe
9846 7963%%

Carlucci's is a friendly Italian restaurant bar and cafe with an outdoor area with a bistro blind annex. Carlucci's has been around for a long time and still stands proud on the main corner of the Templestowe shopping/café precinct area. They have an unbeatable range of stunning desserts that includes cakes and continental biscuits. You'll find all your favorites here and a few surprises including layered cheesecakes. Relax at Carlucci's with a mixed drink or coffee and then wander down the street to do some window shopping.

Miss Marie
45 Beetham Parade, Rosanna

This is in a location off the main street so it was a risky business venture that has obviously paid off. It didn't take diners long to find out this is a great spot to eat. They do not rely on passing traffic and there are no phone bookings (another testament to their success).
Miss Marie are well known for their superb Coffee. They have a house blend and use Five Senses Coffee's Dark Horse, a blend of three single origins (Sumatran Lintong Lake Toba, Guatemalan Antigua Los Volcanes and Papua New Guinean Nambayufa). They have some delicious looking petite, healthy and very decadent cakes and treats to choose from.

Citrus Tart Café
%%2D Lambourn Rd, Watsonia
9435 1507 %%& #8206 ;

As you can tell from the name, they feature a lemon tart that is unrivalled.
The Citrus Tart is a cosy, family owned café conveniently located close to the Watsonia station. It is run by a mother and daughter team. Most of the food is homemade including the popular citris tart. For the little ones they sell petite cakes and sweets from just $1.50. If you are after something savory you won't be disappointed. The Citrus Tart Café have the biggest menu around for a small café. They get very busy because they are very good value so ring first for a booking.

The Bridge Hotel
%%1425 Plenty Rd, Mernda
90371800%%
thebridgeinnhotel.com.au

For the best value sweet treat any time of the day go to the Bridge Hotel lounge and have a dessert for $4 while watching the entertainment. The chocolate mousse on a soft chocolate cake with ganashe on top is rich and tastes as good as it looks. The passionfruit cheesecake is lightly tangy. Stay on for dinner, the kids can play in the indoor play area or you can have a flutter while you are there. The Bridge Hotel is a busy venue that used to be the last pub on the outskirts of Melbourne. This is now a modern upbeat place to eat and meet. If you go up Plenty Rd you will see they have kept the beautiful historic frontage.

Deganis
35/29 Louis Street, Airport West

As you enter the east side of the Essendon Fields Shopping centre, you will find Deganis taking up a large space and proudly boasting their extensive range selection of cakes and biscuits. The cakes are to die for. Cake and coffee lovers of Essendon are spoilt for choice. Degani's
only use 100% AA certified Arabica beans straight from the crop. I think they should add fresh juices to their menu for those who don't indulge in coffee or want a lighter, healthier beverage.

Tancks Corner Cafe
%%Ironbark Rd, Yarrambat
94361700%%

Just a hop, skip and a jump from Diamond Creek, this is a cafe that you will want to come back to time and time again. Sit on the veranda and enjoy the bush view and a big, homemade country afternoon tea. If you're there at the right time of day you might spot a kangaroo or two. The ricotta pancakes with fresh berries, pistachios and cream are a bit of a favourite. Tancks Corner also sell healthy muffins. Although I always tell everyone the servings are generous enough for two I also always manage to devour all of mine. This café has a long history as a one man post office but is now a modern outlet with lovely gifts. Have a look while you wait for your order to be made fresh.

The Mains
%%Main Rd Eltham
9431 6611%%

This café is a stand out for its excellent service. It was popular as the old Alta Vita café and it's now bigger, brighter and better. The Main café has recently been renovated, the design is Scandinavian influenced and the menu is new and extensive.

The cakes and sweet treats are on display in the walkway through to Coles. It makes it a hard place to resist mid afternoon. Never pass by when you are hungry. I swear I put on a few kilos everytime I (try to) walk by!
