Spring has sprung and if you're looking for a beautiful venue in which to enjoy a High Tea, the glorious Fleur at The Royal offers the most delectable, and aptly coined "Afternoon Bloom" High Tea experience.

While I'd been to the stunningly renovated The Royal - for a drink and a bite - I'd not yet experienced Fleur.

To start, the decor is right up my Art Nouveau-phile strasse - a visual delight, from the leadlight windows, stylish but casual bistro chairs and vintage wine bar to the beautiful "fleur" arrangements, including the ginormous one suspended from the ceiling.

Greeted by a man in a teal velvet jacket, I knew I was in the right place. It was "date afternoon" for me and le hubs, but it would also be a fantastic choice for a group gathering, hen's afternoon, mum-and-daughter day, et cetera.

Available only on Saturdays, Fleur describes it as "Saturday afternoons to savour… with a hint of sparkle." Once seated in one of the cosy bench seats, we were offered our "Prosecco upon arrival" and had our dietary needs double-checked.

Our savoury treats soon arrived - and the hardest part was deciding which to go for first:

  • mushroom and truffle arancini, mozzarella, kewpie

  • seasonal brik pastry tartlet

  • toasted corn cake, whipped soft cheese

  • finger sandwich, fine herbs, black garlic

  • smoked salmon and caper chouquette

All delicious, mind you. The hubs also ordered some oysters because... omnivore... and a Taurean.

Having swilled the prosecco, we ordered a cocktail each, then tucked into the equally scrumptious sweet selections:

  • lemon and yuzu meringue tartlet

  • Basque cheesecake (I can't get enough of Basque cheesecake at the moment!)

  • dark chocolate, cherry, wattleseed

    AND petit four!

We finished off our feast with French press coffee - we're more double-shot kinda people, so be warned it's less for caffeine hit than it is the traditional digestif element.

A beautiful afternoon in bloom, and I'm keen to go back to sample its evolving menu.
