I am an academic and writer living in Melbourne. I love to travel and I also love writing about all the things Melbourne, regional Victoria and other parts of Australia have to offer.
Burlesque and cabaret at its best

Following the sold out success of The Butterlfy Club Show, After Hours comes to Bennett's Jazz Lane Club on Sunday 18th December 2016, 8.00pm: click here for tickets.

I had never been to the Butterfly Club before so the evening I went to see After Hourshad me looking forward to both - the club and the show. At the end off a typical, somewhat unknown, Melbourne laneway, the Butterfly Club invites you into its fascinating interior. Once inside, waiting for the show to begin I had a good chance to look around this quaint, quirky and very Melbourne club.

Lots of delicious cocktails served in the foyer bars surrounded by an enormous collection of kitsch make the waiting an experience in itself. That's the thing with artefacts and memorabilia, one or two fit the definition of kitsch but a whole collection make it interesting and appealing. There is history, culture, childhood memories entwined in this collection; old but comfortable lounge chairs invite to sit, sip and observe.

The quirkiness of The Butterfly Club

Once seated in the very small and intimate theatre, everything pointed to a fun show, the ushers dressed in costume, the small band on stage, including a very glamorous piano player, the juggler with her sad face and the clown trapped in an arcade-like box.

The MC, Mistress of Ceremonies, Tash York, had the requisite charm, strong voice and personality to get the audience excited and ready to celebrate the cabaret acts about to entertain us for the next 45 minutes or so. And entertain they did, there was music and song, magic, vaudeville, sideshow and of course, burlesque. There was much laughter, wonderment and questions in one's mind as to how some things are done. Miss Bettie Bombshell, as the producer and the final act of the show, provided a fitting, sensuous finale and a wish that she would keep going for just a bit longer.

Betty Bombshell left the audience wanting more (or less if you get my meaning)

The Butterfly Club stages many more shows offering a wide variety of fun, entertainment and good times. You can check them out here. Make sure you get there early too for those delicious cocktails and a chance to take in the fascinating collections on the walls and shelves.

Looks great, Olga - those skew pictures would drive me nuts, I would spend the whole night trying to put them straight, but realise that's the intended effect!
