Question: When is a museum not a museum (well, at least not the kind of museum you're probably used to)?Answer: When it's a sophisticated after-hours space for over 18s with food, drink and live entertainment on top of a host of permanent and temporary displays and world-class touring exhibitions.

The fabulous Queensland Museum's Brisbane home at the Queensland Cultural Centre at South Bank isn't just for kids. They host regular and Exhibitions/Events and Activities/Museum After Dark#.WPsOJGelfm0 After Dark events especially for adults, and what a great idea that is. I have loved every minute of taking my own children, and now grandchildren, to the museum, but that experience comes complete with a myriad of unanswerable questions, being dragged on to the next display before you've had a chance to fully appreciate the one before, and toilet stops at inopportune moments.

There's something about hanging around in a museum after dark without children in tow, absorbing the history, enjoying the exhibitions in your own good time, listening to live music and fascinating talks from people who are usually in the background, and having a few drinks for good measure, that seems like an illicit pleasure; and a great pleasure it is, I can say after attending previous After Dark events.

At and Exhibitions/Events/2017/06/After Dark 23 June#.WPsPhWelfm0 After Dark at Queensland Museum you'll have access to the entire museum from 5.30pm to 9pm on selected Friday evenings, with particular emphasis on the current major touring exhibition. The hugely successful Hadron Collider exhibition finishes on 25 April but it will be followed by and Exhibitions/Exhibitions/2017/06/Gladiators#.WPsU-Welfm0 Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum from 23 June 2017 to 28 January 2018. This is a fascinating international touring exhibition and Brisbane is the only Australian city where you can see it. Read more about it here .

The exhibition combines traditional displays with models, as well as multimedia and interactive technology, to create a truly immersive experience where you can get to know the real-life world of gladiators. And you can enjoy expert talks, food, drinks and live music while you peruse its many wonders, all without the kids — heaven. Get a group together for a fun, adult night out.
