Now in the final days of celebration, with a few events still to be held in Melbourne and surrounds, Africa Day , formerly known as African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day it is an annual commemoration of the foundation of the African Union on 25th May 1963. Festivities are held all over the World in partnership with United Nations, the African Union, Non-Government Organisations and community organisations.



Some of the events still available to attend are as follows

  • African Day at Victoria University – Thursday 17th May 2018

  • Celebrations will be held at the university with students and staff invited to meet new people and try some delicious African food while learning about the culture and traditions of the African Nation and its people. Registration is required for catering purposes. Location will be Building P Cafeteria at Footscray Park Campus. Time 11.00am to 2.00pm.

  • African Day Australia Family, Youth and Advancing African Australian Forums


  • This day is to be held on Saturday 19th May at the Library at the Docks, 107 Victoria Harbour, Esplanade, Docklands from 9.30am to 5.00pm. The event is free. The day will be split into two categories –

    Advancing Africa Australian Agenda from 9.30am to 12 Noon and Family & Youth Forum from 1.30pm to 5.00pm. The theme is Mental Wellness, Looking After Your Wellbeing). For more information, you can contact [email protected]

  • African Theatrical Performance Play

  • This play is titled "And Her Name Is" and will be performed at Fitzroy Townhall from Monday 21st to Wednesday 23rd (inclusive) commencing at 7.30pm for an hour duration.

  • Another free event is the Africa Day Art and Exhibition, which will be held at The Warehouse in North Melbourne from Friday 18th May for one week, concluding on Friday 25th May 2018.



  • Film Forum "The Representation of Africans In Cinema – Hollywood vs African Film Makers

  • This event will be held on Saturday 24th May from 3.30 to 4.30pm. There is also a screening of African Short Films on Sunday 25 May and tickets for this event can be purchased via ACMI . The film commences at 4.00pm and concludes at 5.00pm.

    The Gala Dinner (Black Tie) concludes the celebrations to be held at the Peninsula, Shed 14 Central Pier, 161 Harbour Esplanade Docklands. This event is to be held on Saturday 26th May from 6.30pm to Midnight. More information click here .
