Away from the main shopping strip, hidden in the back streets of Sunshine therein lies . I discovered it through word of mouth, as I have with other popular kebab places like Tiba's and Roxy . There is nothing quite like trying out a good recommendation and then passing it off as your own. Unless of course you read a wonderful article on Weekend Notes, then you must pass on the link.

On this visit, it was just after celebrations for Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. The familiar stylised Ottaman wallpaper is comfortably matched with a chandelier however the difference was a small plate of dates on every table. I thought it was something new while a knowledgeable friend pointed out that the dates were used to break the fasting.

The word on the rumour mill is that the head chef was once a chef at a 5 star hotel in Qatar. Behind the little display case counter at the back of the shop you can often glimpse him grilling skewers. Above the counter there is a photo display of the menu. It's concise and features a range of kebab meat skewer platters, rice and qorma/curry dishes. It pays to share with friends as you can sample everything. This is very much a sharing is caring environment as once again there's fresh naan involved.

For the meat lovers out there, I would recommend the mix kebab meal. The rice is soft and tasty however just share some off a friend or try it next time. If for you the word kebab is synonymous with gorging yourself on Middle Eastern meats, the rice can take a back seat.

Once you have completed ordering you can go to the little fountain looking apparatus near the back of the display and wash your hands. Although at first you wonder if you are allowed to be there, the expectation is that you clean your hands before and after eating. To add delight to all fellow germaphobes you don't even have to touch the tap at all! This unique little facility has a foot pedal to turn the water on and off. Unfortunately on my last visit it was out of order and washing my hands was just not the same.

While waiting for your meal there is also a TV to watch. However once the uniformed waiter arrives, you'll forget there is even a TV in the restaurant. The mix kebab is succulent lamb, tasty chicken and tasty beef. Its a glorious trifecta of meat. The chicken, which is quite nice, always pales in comparison to the lamb and the beef. The salad is really there to make you feel less guilty/slightly cover up the fact you're there for the meat.

Another interesting factor is you are not bombarded with sauces. Everywhere else seems to have at least 5 or more to choose from yet Afghan only has one. A white lemony garlic sauce that may or may not have any yogurt in it. I personally love simplicity in sauces that are not star of the show. I'll take a complicated pasta sauce but there's nothing like tomato sauce to brighten up a bowl of chips. Although I was initially skeptical of Afghan's sauce, I'm now a big fan. It is simple, it combines the sourness of lemon with a more robust garlic flavour without being too sour.

Afghan is all about simplicity. You pay after ordering at the display case. There's a 408 bus stop literally a shop down. The food warrants a large turnover in a compact space, so be mindful to not stay too long on a busy Friday night.

provides the opportunity to have a trifecta of beef, chicken and lamb in one dish. The one sauce is all you need to compliment your dish. The simple and relaxed atmosphere is perfect for catching up with good company.

**Experience Summary:

Service – 5 stars; friendly service and the very interesting fountain shows consideration of customer hygiene.

Atmosphere – 4 stars; family friendly, comfortable and busy. However the size of the store makes it difficult to stay a bit longer.

Food – 5 stars; great food that is well made, variety without the menu being too overwhelming and one great sauce.

Uniqueness factors – all your favourite kebab meats in one dish so you don't have to decide between them, a unique fountain showing consideration for washing hands and one great sauce.**
