I hadn't eaten Afghani food before but will certainly be eating it again. The Afghan is in a great location in Brunswick Street, which is always a fun place to go. The atmosphere is what I imagine is homely Afghani, relaxing and decorated with a combo of traditional and kitsch (particularly the lightshades!). Our waiter was a very convivial gent, entertaining us with a couple of funny anecdotes which always makes me want to go back to a restaurant. I didn't go upstairs but apparently there is a tented banquet room for special occasions.
You can choose from 3 different types of banquets or do what the four of us did and order individual meals to share. It's licensed but BYO wine as well at $3.50 a head corkage. The meals range from $5.50 (desserts) to $20.50 for mains. All mains come with rice and you receive a generous order of bread - 2 serves was more than enough for 4 people. The vegetarian dishes were particularly yummy. I liked that the food was tasty without being hot & extra spicy. I love a bit of heat in my food but don't always want to eat it. Special mention to the home-made ice-cream too. We spent about $40 each which included 4 entrees, 4main dishes, rice, bread, 4 desserts, coffee, 1 beer and corkage. Not bad I think.
