Totally indulgent and extremely blissful are words that come to mind following my treatment experience at Coorparoo's aesthetica - the urban beauty, hair and skin salon. Aptly called The aesthetica Retreat - two and a half hours of relaxation and pampering - something time-poor individuals think longingly about but rarely act upon.

Tali, an aesthetica Skin Management Technician and Ally, an experienced Senior Hair Stylist, together devised a treatment package for mind, body and soul that enriches both the skin and hair leaving it feeling nourished and loved. "Ally and I work together one Sunday a month and two nights during the week. We developed this special treatment program to really indulge our clients and make use of our specialised skills," Tali said.

The Retreat package includes:

• A tenderising warm magnesium foot bath followed by a relaxing foot and "powerpoint" massage.

• An aromatic oil massage over the neck, back and shoulders.

• A traditional Facial Treatment customised to skin type and condition.

• A deeply nourishing hair treatment, shampoo and finish.

This treatment is not just about pampering and relaxation. "The benefits of this treatment travel deep. We get into your tired muscles; your dry skin and your neglected hair," Tali said.

Tali has been massaging for 19 years. She has studied aromatherapy and herbal medicine and is a qualified reiki practitioner. Blending techniques from Swedish; lymphatic drainage; remedial and point massage, she uses efficient moves from each, to provide the most effective treatment to relax the client.

Tali considers the main benefits from this signature treatment are:

• the re-moisturising/re-hydration.

• releasing tension in the muscles.

• relaxation.

There are major health benefits from lymphatic drainage and the relaxation and releasing of tightened muscles. The facial allows Tali to gain a good insight into what condition the skin is in and how to address any issues and possibly tweak the skin care a client may be using at home.

It is recommended with the change of season to have a regular facial treatment. "The skin especially becomes more dehydrated as the cooler months approach. Balancing the hydrolipic film is essential to keep the skin condition clean. Our treatment is a nice way to combine the holistic body care experience with aesthetica's cosmeceutical skin care lines, to provide advanced skin care techniques for the best possible outcomes," Tali said.

Apart from the usual hydration issues at this time of the year and being time-poor to follow a thorough skin care regime at home, I am keen to relax and wholeheartedly absorb the pampering.

At the beginning of the treatment, Tali conducted a skin assessment, client consult, discussing any concerns I may have with my skin. After the skin analysis, we start the treatment with a warm magnesium foot bath infused with oil, chosen by Tali in consultation with my needs. My selected oil was peppermint: for "uplifting", (I felt she was spot on with that choice). Feeling the day's stresses start to fall away, I quickly succumbed to bliss mode, as Tali gently used point massage on my feet. Whatever your fetishes may be - I don't think you can beat a relaxing foot massage - especially with someone who knows their stuff.

"Magnesium is absorbed transdermally through the skin, bypassing the digestive system and straight into the blood stream," Tali says. "This is such a good way to re-mineralise the body through the feet." I admit to only half hearing this information, as I felt myself slip into relax mode.

After drying my feet and changing positions to the massage bed, the next stage of my treatment was a dry point massage. Double heaven, as Tali gently massaged all the major reflex points in my feet. Just touching enough points to stimulate my major organs I was informed. (At this stage of chilling out, I have to admit my thoughts were far from thinking about those organs!)

I felt my tightened muscles relaxing under Tali's expert hands, assisted by the application of a sweet smelling almond-based oil. The oil was warmed and imbibed with a selection of essential oils and jojoba. "We blend the base oil to suit the client and their skin," Tali said. "Sometimes I use argan oil (a Moroccan oil) which is really rich and is fabulous to re-moisturise the skin."

Tali started the hour facial by holding a specific essential oil under my nose. "I tend to use oils to obtain an effect on an emotional level. When you relax, the frequency the body is vibrating at alters, so with the slower metabolic rate, I can use oils to match the happy feelings you have." Whatever Tali was doing - it was working for me, as I drifted off to the soothing smell of delicious citrus being massaged gently into my dry facial skin.

As this is a hands-on facial (no use of machinery) the client receives the benefit of massage throughout the hour. Using Beaute Pacifique products, a cosmeceutical line that focuses on impregnating your skin with many vitamins, my face felt and looked refreshed and re-hydrated afterwards.

It was hard to re-surface from that comfortable place I had slipped into, but it was time to move onto the final stage of the treatment – the hair pampering.

The indulgence continued with Ally and some much needed hair revitalisation. With all the blow-drying; sun exposure and chemicals we apply to our hair, it tends to become dull and dry, much like our skin feels when its dehydrated. Ally, with over 10 years in the hair industry, starting in New Zealand, then later with Stefans in Australia, has an experienced eye when it comes to hair needs. She enjoys building a personal rapport with her clients and as a relative newcomer to aesthetica, is looking forward to creating new connections with the aesthetica clientele.

Ally designed the Retreat's hair treatment around three important areas:

•hydration

•protein fortification

•relaxation

She said she hopes her clients "will feel deeply refreshed and rejuvenated after our Retreat treatment."

Ally applies a pre-oil spray, infused with rich plant based oils including organic rosehip, pure botanical extracts, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to replenish moisture lost through wind, sun and various chemical processes. "The chemically damaged areas will soak it up more readily," Ally said. Yes, I was thinking, I have a few of those areas!

After the spay oil was combed through and left for 10 minutes to infuse, I was taken to the basin where Ally shampooed my hair twice. She then applied a Keune protein treatment. I learn, that its not only our body that needs protein to eat - the hair does as well. Although the hair is made up of keratin - a sclero-protein - it is easily compromised with chemicals, harsh shampoos, wet hair brushing (which stretches and breaks the hair) and deficient diet. "If there is not enough strength in hair protein, we end up with dry, fly away hair," said Ally. "This Keune treatment helps to repair the protein bonds that are broken."

Ally has been working with the Keune products for over two years now and finds they are easy to use and are very economical. My hair lapped up this TLC, as Ally gently massaged the product into my hair follicles, de-stressing my scalp in the process. Ally said this Keune mask infuses wheat micro proteins which penetrate the hair to the medulla to restore the inner structure and assist it in regaining strength. Keravis strengthens the inside and outside of the hair, leaving the hair soft, shiny & easy to detangle. This treatment does not add weight to the hair and has a short processing time of only three minutes. A quick and intensive repairing treatment formulated to restore fragile, extremely dry and damaged hair as well as giving hair of any condition that silky feel we ladies love.

Apart from a foot massage, I am very partial to a scalp massage. I lay back in the salon basin chair and allowed Ally's soothing hands to release what little tension was left in my scalp. I was floating on cloud nine.

The ladies do not want you leaving the salon looking bedraggled, as you often do after a relaxing facial and oil treatment. Ally expertly blow dries and styles my hair, making me feel like a million bucks.

Feeling super pampered and very relaxed - I realise how sensationally pleasant it has been to lie still for a few hours and succumb to the Retreat treatment.

Any client visiting aesthetica, is aware of their unique and special culture. They provide exceptional personalised service - but its the detail and the knowledge that separates them from the rest. The staff sincerely care - an irreplaceable quality in this day and age. There are no "juniors" only experienced professionals, who are genuinely interested in their craft.

This is an exclusive treatment offered one Sunday a month and two nights during the week. It is specifically targeted to one client at a time, allowing the girls to create a salon environment that feels like a retreat and where you are made to feel very special. Salon Director, Tracy Dobbin, is excited about creating an indulgent treatment experience for aesthetica clients to enjoy. "It's an opportunity for us to integrate the skin and hair services using quality products into a relaxed and finished service," said Tracy.

The essence of what Tali and Ally wish to provide with the aesthetica Retreat - is a highly personalised and relaxing experience. This treatment would suit anyone in need of relaxation. If you take the "re" out of retreat, you have the answer to what this treatment is about.

My recommendation is treat yourself, you deserve it.
