Once a year for 3 weeks only, textile collector and traveller Keryn James opens her Adventuress handmade and tribal textiles home shop/gallery in Hyde Park for Adelaide textile lovers to visit and perhaps find a gift with a unique story.
Ex-ABC TV producer and archaeologist Keryn James is obsessed with textiles made using old historic techniques and skills handed down from mother to daughter or father to son. Textiles that are hand-woven, hand-printed, hand-embroidered, hand-dyed, hand-stitched and made with skill, time and pride and she travels to explore, learn, and bring a small selection from every trip back to Adelaide.
In March 2017, Keryn took a group of textile-loving women to Morocco. From that adventure Keryn brought a handful of small bright hand-knotted Berber cushions from a small town of 12-mudbrick homes in the Sahara desert, some beautiful, traditional Moroccan woven cushion covers from the historic pirate port of Essaouira, a few mud-cloth clutch purses possibly from sub-Sahara but bought in Marrakech, beautiful embroidery from an atielier attached to a Christian monastery in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains and even some rough little Berber dolls made from sticks and pieces of scrap fabric bought from children in the Sahara.
She has bright patchwork quilts and cushion covers collected from her trip to the Thar Desert in Pakistan, intricately embroidered vintage tribal clothing from Gujarat, scarves from various workshops around India, an incredible small collection of hats, caps and face covers collected from Morocco and Pakistan, vintage kantha quilts made with thousands of stitches, a small number of antique linen chemises (some with embroidered initials) acquired from a friend in Lyon, France who buys from local markets, many items of vintage tribal clothing, embroidered scraps for textile art, a small amount of jewellery, contemporary clothing by Madame Hall, a South Australian designer living in Gujarat who combines beautiful local fabrics and tribal embroideries into her shirts and skirts, and some beautiful hand- embroidered silk scarves and shawls from Kolkata (Calcutta). Hundreds of textiles with unique stories!
Adventuress will be open from Friday 1st to Friday 22nd December – 7 days per week from midday to 6:00 pm.
This is a great opportunity to view Keryn's unique collection and buy something you love for yourself or as a special gift for a textile-loving friend or family member.
