Throughout the month of December take a trip to historic Port Adelaide to discover Adventuress gallery & #43 ; studio hidden in a quirky 1860s National Trust building a couple of doors from the Maritime Museum.
Open Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 3pm, Adventuress is the passion of fabric and history fanatic, ex ABC TV producer and archaeologist Keryn James, who has travelled to faraway places looking for beautiful textiles - both new and old, made using age-old processes and techniques passed from generation to generation. Her beautiful gallery & #43 ; studio is an Aladdin's cave of artisanal textiles - they say there's nothing else like it in Adelaide! If you're looking for neo-Bohemian colour and texture to brighten up your home, you'll find Adventuress is brimming with history, culture and stories!
Included in the range are hand-stitched ralli quilts; cushions and bags made by Meghwar tribal women in the Thar Desert of Pakistan; contemporary shibori-patterned silk scarves from Bangalore; skirts using vintage Gujarati embroidery by Australian ex-film costume designer Madame Hall now living and designing in India; intricate bandhani-tied scarves from Bhuj, hand-stitched Kantha throws from Rajasthan; lots of embroideries by the nomadic Indian Rabaris; embroidered and mirrored tribal clothing; a quilt by the Sami, snake-charming caste of Pakistan whose embroidery resembles snake skin; and pure silk Ajrakh scarves hand block-printed and plant-dyed in a 13-step process by generations of a Pakistani family.
There are also many of Keryn's shawls and scarves hand-dyed using indigo, Eucalyptus leaves, rusty old iron and plants found in the Flinders Ranges and Kangaroo Island, as well as digital prints and wax-resist batik silk scarves.Along with a small selection of tribal jewellery, there is a gift for anyone who loves hand-made items with history, priced from $5 to $500!
