Please note in-house pottery classes are currently cancelled, however, online clay building classes are available. Refer to the website for more information.

Hands around a piece of clay is better than a floor mop
All the potters I know are either half-baked or cracked. Except for local lass, Carys Martin, who is sharing her vast knowledge of ceramics in Adult Pottery Classes held in conjunction with Colour My Pot at Cleveland.

Carys has an Arts Degree, is a qualified teacher and has been working with clay for over twenty years. Her work has been in solo exhibitions in Australia, America, and the United Kingdom, so she knows her 'stuff'.

You too can learn about clay in a 5-week hand-building course commencing on Thursday, 23rd of April, at 6:30 pm. Sessions are 2 hours in length and there is coffee available on site, should you feel that you are flagging.

During Lesson 1, Beginners learn the foundation skills including slab building, coiling and pinch pots.

An intimidating start

Don't know what a pinch pot is? Neither did I! Pinch pots are basically vessels that can be shaped by using your hands to mould the clay. Think milk jugs, egg cups, bowls and pots of all shapes and sizes.

Here is my gravy boat in progress (be kind please: this was my first ever clay experience).

Lessons 2 and 3 are about making your own projects, utilising the skills you've been building upon and Carys's creative inspiration.

Lessons 4 and 5 are dedicated to decorating your pieces.

Creations generally take 2 weeks before they are ready for collection as they need to be fired in the kiln.

Materials included in the fee include:

Earthenware clay
Earthenware glazes
Firing

Carys is also happy to help those with some pottery knowledge to increase their skillset and prior to starting will send an introduction email to help you find inspiration for your project.

Colour My Pot is located at 39 Middle Street, Cleveland.

The cost of this 5-week clay course is $349.00.

However, if you are unsure if clay is your thing, then there are three-hour Introductory Workshops available, which allow you to get a feel for the medium. This is the road I took and loved it.
