Drama with a Difference is one of Australia's most respected and established independent drama schools. With a history that spans over twenty years, it is the launching pad of many successful Australian actors; many of them were first seen in one of their productions or classes.
The school runs Adult Drama Classes at two different levels. Both classes are open to those with and without experience.
The first level is the Recreational Adult Drama Course, which involves two hours per week at their venue in Kew (from 7.30pm - 9.30pm). This course is designed to run for a year, however, students may elect to come for as many terms as they wish and there is no obligation to continue. Most students do elect to continue for the year, as there is a "work in progress" performance at the end of the year, that is open only to friends and family.
Students in the first level Recreational Class will learn the fundamentals of acting and the focus is very much on having fun and using acting for recreational purposes. This might include a desire to increase self-confidence, presentation skills, meet like-minded people, or simply to have fun!
The second level course is the Performance / Intensive Program, also known as the Melbourne Comedy Festival course. This course runs on a Monday night from their Clifton Hill venue (from 7.30 - 9.45pm) for approximately nine weeks; after this, there are two technical rehearsals at their theatre in Kew, followed by two shows in the Melbourne Comedy Festival. This course is great for aspiring actors, but also includes students who simply wish to know more about the acting process. Drama with a Difference has been running these performance courses for eight years, and are able to integrate people with and without experience into the same group.
The Performance / Melbourne Comedy Festival course will involve each student being given a scene (or scenes), which they will then rehearse with the teacher.
Drama with a Difference is known for creating a safe and nurturing environment for non-actors, where the emphasis is very much on personal best. In both courses the atmosphere will be non-competitive and feature students from a wide range of ages, professions and trades.
Students will be introduced to many of the techniques used by professional actors, but in a manner that will greatly benefit their own personal and working lives.
