West End is well established as a popular Brisbane dining hub but with exorbitant and rising rental prices, retail businesses come and go in this district. Two clever and entrepreneurial ladies have overcome the odds and obstacles by combining forces and housing both their businesses - Adore Vintage and Dressed by Jude in the one shop.
Besides an A-frame board on the sidewalk there is no shopfront signage as yet, so I was fortunate to discover this unique retail establishment quite by accident; walking past, a gorgeous green Dorothy Perkins minidress hanging on the outdoor sale rack caught my eye and drew me in.
Inside, the shop is split straight down the middle with Chris' stock on one side and Judy's on the other; the women don't consider themselves business partners as they shared set up costs and split overheads but have separate sales counters, purchasing and maintaining their own stock. In this brilliant manner they save on the costs of running a business in West End and avoid potential conflict.
The interior is light and airy, simply but tastefully decorated and the stock well organised by size. An eclectic combination of new, designer and pre-loved fashion items create a unique and pleasurable shopping experience.
From every day work wear to glamorous evening wear to authentic vintage treasures, the store is well stocked with clothing, shoes, bags and purses, gifts, accessories and jewellery. Chris and Judy purchase stock and also offer a consignment deal to the general public - next time you clear out your wardrobe perhaps try and get some of your money back by taking it down to the store and allowing the ladies to try and sell it.
Chris is passionate about fashion and design and admits to absolutely loving her new role. She asserts there are two major differences between their store and other pre-loved clothing stores - quality and affordability. The emphasis on quality and useable stock is very apparent and with prices averaging a third of the retail value it is certainly affordable - I did end up purchasing the Dorothy Perkins dress by the way, in near-new condition for a very affordable $30. And if you find something you have to have but can't quite cover it, there is a lay-by option available.
