Joining a gym can be a tiring exercise, even before you start doing your actual workout. Here in Adelaide there are many gyms to pick from with different contracts, equipment, classes and locations. But where is Adelaide's best gym?

Curves is an international franchise with gyms in over 70 countries. They have four locations in Adelaide, including the one I visited on Magill road. The concept of Curves is unlike other gym, in that is has a circuit of machines and exercises that you work through on each visit. The staff seemed very professional, friendly and proud of their system which is directed solely at women. The focus seems to be on weight loss and maintaining general fitness and wellbeing with short sessions of about 30 minutes. The downside is that they don't offer a variety of fitness classes or machines such as treadmills and bikes. They do have a good introductory offer of 1 week free though which could help you decide if it's the right gym for you.

Jetts 24 hour fitness is a modern, bright 24 hour chain of gyms with 12 locations in Adelaide, with two more opening soon. The Jetts I visited was almost empty as it was the middle of the day and unfortunately un-manned. Even though the gym itself is open for 24 hours a day, staff are only on hand in the mornings and evenings from Monday to Friday and from 8.30am to 12 noon on Saturdays. Looking through the window, there were a good selection of machines from treadmills to cross trainers and also a weights section. The rates are also very reasonable from as little as $21.95* a fortnight with a joining fee and key charge extra, it can even work out cheaper if you join with a family member.

Fitness First is one of those gyms that most people have heard of. They have five branches here, and offer a huge range of equipment, classes and other extras including swimming pools, aromatherapy and steam rooms and lots more. Taking a virtual club tour of your local Fitness First on their website is a good way to check out what you could be in for. Fitness first also offers introductory offers for new members, such as a 1 week starter membership for new members for $29.95* for a 7 day trial.

24fit is also, as its name suggests, a 24 hour gym. It only has two locations so far in Adelaide, and has a similar style to Jetts in that staff are only there at certain times during the week. They have a good range of machines including weights and an excellent rate of just $12.95 per week, and cheaper if you join with a friend. Most of the machines also have entertainment systems incorporated which means you can plug yourself in and watch your favourite TV show while doing your workout. At 24fit it is also possible to arrange a personal trainer that will work with you for an extra fee. If you are thinking of joining 24fit they also have introductory offers that waive the joining fee for new members making it an even better deal.

These are some of the many gyms and sports centres available around Adelaide which means you now have no reason to put off getting fit. So what do you think Adelaide's best gym is?
