Food and words.
Published October 4th 2011
Whether it is one of those Frog Cakes that South Australia is famous for, or a good Australian meat pie, South Aussie's love a good bakery. It doesn't matter if you're after a loaf of bread to make toast for breakfast, or if you're looking for some cakes to give the kids a treat, the quality of the bakery you buy from can really make a difference. I've heard good things about the Port Elliot Bakery, but I'm yet to try it, so instead I've compiled a list of a few other Adelaide bakeries, but we still want your help in naming which one is the best.

Cafe De Vili's is a good place to start. Vili's is an icon in South Australia, and these pies are still made in the state and shipped around the world. Their cafe in Mile End is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You'll be able to find all of Vili's popular pies, pasties, cakes, and slices, as well as some special flavours that are only sold on site. You can also grab some to take home for later, or enjoy some of the other food at their cafe from schnitzels to burgers. They're great if you're after a pie, or if you just need a late night meal.

Another bakery that is open 24 hours a day is the Bakery on O'Connell. Their food is always fresh, and they have a great range of pies and cakes for you to choose from. They are a popular spot on O'Connell Street and are usually busy whether it is 1 in the afternoon or 1 in the morning. They do a range of coffees and milkshakes to help their tasty food go down.

Then there is the Orange Spot Bakery on Anzac Highway in Glenelg. They make some pretty strong claims of being 'Australia's Best Bread Bakery' and having 'Australia's Best Pasties'. We'll have to see if you agree. They have won plenty of awards and have danishes, donuts, tarts, and more. There are great place to grab a feed if you're down at Glenelg.

You might think that one of the many great Vietnamese bakeries around Adelaide deserves the title. WIth delicious fresh bread baked daily, as well as the flavour filled Banh Mi Vietnamese Rolls, you might think that one of these bakeries is the only place to shop.

So tell us about your favourite bakery in the comments, and let us know just why you think it's the best.

For my money The Mill Bakery in Ethelton wins ‘hands-down’. The food is constantly tasty, the coffee is always perfect and the staff are smiley and friendly with a terrific buzz to the place. Come on down and sample the pies but don’t order the last Veggie Cornish because that’s mine!

if you all promise not to go there often, as locals like to keep it to themselves, and we have enough tourists selling out on weekends as it is! lol... here is the secret:
Willunga was the first, and is still the best. the same group trained the yankalilla boys, and ditto with normanville, and port elliot was also a related family bakery... so, i can tell you that the best are by far willunga, port eliiot, yankalilla and normanville, but if you want the truly original and best, its willunga who have been serving the best since the late 60s.
my suggestions are the cheesespinach chicken slice, the cheese potato pie, and the cheese and veg pastie... and all the cakes are perfect.
**posted by dobbing local, who may regret tourism influx for baked goods shortages in future.***

Bread Top is one of my favourites. A good Chinese bakery with sweet and savoury buns, from BBQ pork buns to sweet red bean. They're in the Southern Cross Arcade entrance and Grote Street. The best in my opnion though is Nana's Chinese Bakery in Chinatown - the pork sizzle buns are addictive.

From what I have heard the anonymous tipster is not correct about the Port Elliot Bakery. My understanding is they have not moved at all but the original Port Elliot Bakery is still in Port Elliot and that's the best place to go. Don't settle for anything less than the original Pt. Elliot Bakery.

the Orange Spot Bky at Glenelg not only claims they are the best they have the National trphies to prove it, having wom australia's best Pasties 3 time now, Australia's best donuts 5 years running and Australia's best bread in 2010. As you walk in the door the display that hits you is breathtaking. But the proof is in the eating. Wow a real back for tantalising taste I had to go back for 2nd's

The Brighton Jetty Bakery has made an impact, even though only new in the region. Fresh bread baking in the early morning drew me in that direction when I was on my run back in April and every day since I happened upon the enticing treats the bakery offers. The buns are my favourite though and pasties, custard berlinas, well OK I''m hooked. It is great that the Matkovic family took this venture on after being owners at the Port Elliot Bakery for so many years. Their welcoming nature, early morning smiles and expertise in their field is to be commended. Long live good taste ... may the bakery grow beyond expectations.

Sorry guys, but I'm going to count the Pt Elliot bakery out, as last time I checked Pt Elliot is not part of the Adelaide metro area. It's a key point, as there is a difference between metro and country bakeries. I'll put Pat a Cake, Malvern down as my favourite metro bakery and the Minlaton Bakery for country. Arvear.

I like to think of myself as a Bakery specialist I rate everyone I go to against the pt Elliot Bakery to which has the best veg and cheese pasties ever hubby loves their snag rolls the chicken parcels r to die for oh and the honey sticks r amazing it is pricy though but im told everything is cut and sliced fresh daily none of the frozen veg others try and sell its worth the drive.... and from what im told it's still has the same owners it has for years the gorman family with inlaws.

Come on down to Port Noarlunga with the kids, grab a coffee, cake or a great salad roll at Beck's Bakery. Time to spare drive over the Onkaparinga bridge and let the kids play on the free community built playground. A great day out in the colder months and warmer months too!

I think Pat-a-cake bakeries in Duthy st and Norwood parade are fantastic especially if you need cake for work as you can get great gluten or dairy-free type cakes and don't pay a fortune. They have a good range of cakes and I've even bought a range of their mini tarts and cakes to serve at dinner parties for a change.

CJ's Bakery on Beach Rd at Christies Beach have amazing food & so friendly. They recently won a few awards at the Adelaide Show & certainly deserve the win.
If anyone remembers Richies Patisserie who were there for about 30 years, they've been taken over by a lovely family who have really put their heart & soul into making it a fantastic place to go...I'm a Huge Fan. Keep up the good work guys!

Every bakery has their strengths and weaknesses!
Bakery on O'Connell has the best Vanilla Slice and Chocolate Donuts going around! Always get friendly service with a smile too and great coffee 24hrs a day! They always have something different to try in pastries too and have recently won awards for Chicken Parmi Pie and Chunky Steak and Sautee Mushroom! Definitely in the running for the Chicken, Mushroom and White Wine Pie too.
St Peters Bakehouse is a good one, not the best coffee but good Carrot Cake and Banana Cake. Although amazing Banana Bread at Bakery on O'Connell.
Although out of the Adelaide area, Pt Elliot trumps all. Keen to try Brighton Baker if these rumours are true.
Hyde Park Bakery is connected by family and baker training to Bakery on O'Connell so for great stuff the other side of town it is definitely worth a go plus they do birthday cakes and amazing bread.
Bakery on O'Connell takes my vote as it is 24hr and they use one of my favourite coffee blends too

Currently it is a toss up between the Woodside bakery (run by Lobethal bakery) as it is one of the few places that sell pretzel bread rolls and Aldinga Homegrain bakery for everything on their menu.
