Single bouts and tickets at the door are also available at each event. Never heard of Roller Derby or been along to a bout? Then read on, this is a sport sure to entertain - you'll laugh, cheer, wince and gasp along with all the lovely ladies that make up Adelaide Roller Derby. They are mean, mean, fighting machines ready to hip and bump anything that gets in their way - so bring on the 2015 clashes.

So what is Roller Derby?

Roller Derby is an all girl contact sport on roller skates with up to 5-a-side on the track during each jam (round). Each event is also known as a bout. The scoring player is known as the jammer who scores points by getting in front of the opposing team and lapping them. The other team members play both offense to get their jammer in front and defence to block the opposing jammer. Each jam usually only runs for a few minutes and the accompanied commentary is usually a crack up.

Roller Derby is an entertaining sport and highly recommended for anyone wanting to see an action packed sport filled with fun and entertainment too. The sport itself has been running since the 1930's and is even up for consideration to be featured at the 2020 Olympics. We love the uniform and make-up attire on both the skaters and the refs. Rocky Horror hasn't seen anything compared to these girls - get set for skeletons and fishnets adorning these vicious skaters who are ready for head to head battle with warpaint galore.

Who are Adelaide Roller Derby

Adelaide Roller Derby (ADRD) are 'hell on wheels in the city of churches' and have been skating around the track since 2007. ADRD features four home teams - the Road Train Rollers, Wild Hearses, Salty Dolls and Mile Die Club. They also have interleague teams known as the Adeladies, Radeladies and the C-Bombs. The team names are just the beginning; each girl has her own derby name which signifies an on-track persona, ability or something about themselves. Each name is usually a pun while still sounding like a real name of sorts. Some great examples from ADRD include Sin and Tonic, Moxxi Riot, Karmen Getme and Victoria Bitter.

This non-profit organisation run by the skaters looks to promote sport over spectacle. While their public bouts are held at Wayville, their home track and training venue is at The Dogs greyhound racing track at Angle Park. You may have also seen them at the Laneway festival this year, where they did a great job handing out waterbottles to all attendees as well as putting on a show mid-way through the concert.

The first bout of 2015 features the Road Train Rollers vs Mile Die Club. Doors open at 6pm and entry is via Goodwood Rd then into the Wayville Pavilion at Adelaide Showgrounds. The season opener is always exciting with freshies (also known as fresh meat or a new team member) getting their first taste of the big track in front of a huge crowd. This year, ADRD welcome 13 freshies to the scene who have been training their hearts out for their first clashes.

Derby games are perfect for families, especially the kids who can bring their scooters, skateboards or skates and zoom around with plenty of space around the pavilion to go crazy. Food and drink is also on offer, usually from of couple of amazing food vans of course. If you are trying to save a bit of cash bring a picnic blanket and a basket of your own nibbles to enjoy during the show spectacular that is derby.

I'm sold, where do I buy tickets?

Season VIP passes can be purchased here starting at $86.20 each, including all bouts throughout the year and the grand final.

Single bouts can be purchased here and start at $14.80 or $38.25 for a family ticket.

If you already have your tickets make sure to bring along a cushion, rugs or fold out chairs as seating is limited. As well as the food and drink on offer, there will also be live entertainment which is sure to please. Previously, this has included live bands, team dances, break-dancing and hilarity from the judges. A range of community stalls showcasing clothing, craft, ADRD merchandise and much more will also be available on the night.

If you haven't been yet, do yourself a favour and grab a ticket. Support local, and help out some awesome women at the same time. The only question now is - whose team are you on? Bring a good set of screamers (lungs preferably) and we'll see you on bleachers or the suicide line if you dare.
