Adelaide-girl relocated to Melbourne. Healthy obsession with live music, film and performance, whiskey, wine and gin, Mexican food, brunch.

No, the 80s aren't back (thankfully). It's Roller Derby season. And those women you've seen skating around Adelaide in fishnets, full of fury and dark with eyeliner and determination - they're Derby chicks. And you've gotta check them out (and get outta their way).

The Adelaide Roller Derby League consists of five competing teams and one 'officials' team.

Unfortunately, the season's almost over. But this means it's nearly time for the action packed grand final double header on Saturday 17 July. If you've missed out on previous bouts, make sure to get a ticket for the finals 'cause it'll be the best chance to see what Derby is all about. Sure, you might have seen Whip It! but until you've seen Barrelhouse Bessy or Tricksey Belt'em make a grand slam, or Lashez give a hip check that sends a girl flying, you haven't seen anything.

Keep your eye out for a ticket to the final, they'll be on sale for about 10 minutes before they're sold out. And trust me, get to the showgrounds early, bring a chair and a snack. The line will be long but worth the wait. And brush up on your Derby know-how so you actually get what the commentators are talking about.

Nothing beats your first time at an Adelaide Derby bout. Come for the atmosphere, uniforms, Derby names, arm wrestle and beer. Stay for the carnage (and the after-party at The Wheatsheaf).

Oh, and if it's your first time. Be brave. Sit in the front row...
