Showcasing the essence of Adelaide's much loved park lands
The Adelaide Park Lands Prize is a biennial event run by Adelaide Park Lands Preservation Association Inc (APPA). It showcases finalists' art which makes a statement or captures the essence of the beautiful park lands which span Adelaide's CBD and North Adelaide. Finalists' art will be on display in the Adelaide Festival Centre Festival Theatre Foyer Gallery from 5 July 2018 until 26 August 2018 (Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm and during performance times) - all of the displayed artwork will be for sale.
Colonel William Light made his name as Adelaide's first surveyor-general and was arguably one the most noted visionaries of his kind. Generations of residents and visitors continue to benefit from his skilful planning of Adelaide's 30 named parks, in the form of a figure-8 double garland spanning 700 hectares of Adelaide CBD and North Adelaide. The fact Adelaide has been ranked in the top 10 of the most liveable cities in the world is largely attributable to these park lands which cater to a huge variety of the population's interests including festivals, sporting and leisure activities. These very same park lands contain an incredible array of native flora and fauna.
Adelaide Park Lands Preservation Association Inc (APPA) is a not-for-profit community group, established in 1987, to ensure Adelaide's park lands are protected, preserved and restored. It has not been an easy task, with what can be best described as a never-ending stream of political battles. Legislation supporting APPA's battles include the Adelaide Park Lands Act 2005 and Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Adelaide's park lands are registered on the Australian National Heritage list).
Winners of the Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize's awards will be announced on Wednesday, 4 July 2018, with $20,000 being first prize. Artworks will be offered for sale following the awards. Exhibiting Finalists artworks can be viewed here.
