While others were being sensible on the cold, windy and wet night of Friday the 19th of July, I was insensibly out at Rundle Mall to catch the . I was quite excited as I have never been to an event as such plus my favourite baristas were competing. Held at BOTZ Cafe at Myer Centre Adelaide, there were 30 competitors in total ready to battle it out for the crown of Latte Art Champion. Considering the weather was less than ideal, turnout was pretty good. Not to mention the all the free coffees they were giving away made for a pretty good attraction.





Baristas from Adelaide's favourite coffee places such as Bar 9, Mother's Milk, Doof Doof, Coffee Barun, Please say Please, First Pour and BOTZ cafe were ready to put on their best artistic touch in tonight's knock out competition. With a total prize pool of $4700, this was by far the largest latte art competition ever held in South Australia. The coffee machine was a Slayer 3 group Espresso machine and the coffee they used was Veneziano Forza Blend. Milk by Fleurieu Milk Company, soy milk by BONSOY and jugs were 300mL and 600mL.

The format of the competition was a random draw for round one where contestants go head to head and it continues in that fashion as a knock out competition. Someone would randomly draw a design card from a box and another card stating the type of cup, for example swan design in latte glass or tulip in cappuccino cup. The real challenge came with an espresso cup, that thing is 80mL and there isn't much time to create your design, the cup fills up pretty fast!





The winner was Bethany from Blefari on Victoria Square with the runner up being Eric from Argo on the Parade. It was quite fun watching how coffee art is done (and tasting free coffee of course). I would love to attend something like this again in the future. Next time I grab a coffee I think I will appreciate the pattern more.
