Adelaide Hills Farmers Market

Every Saturday morning, from 8.30 to 12.30 at Mann St in Mount Barker, the Adelaide Hills Farmers market materialises on the car park and lawns of Families SA. The morning dew has barely dried from the fresh orchard-picked apple and the floral bouquet floats from the zesty orange, plump vine-ripe tomatoes sit in the box where they were placed after being picked. You are greeted by the farmer who has coaxed them from the soil.
The market educates: kids see the dirt still on the carrots and they meet the kitchen goddess who made the cake. Connection to an older, more human interaction offers healthy eating, but so much more. The market humanises commerce: you talk to the person who made the produce. Toddlers frolic in the fresh morning air by the gardens and on the green lawns of the market without artifice.
Lilit's Ararat Food creates Armenian-themed cakes and savouries, the boutique food you won't find elsewhere in Adelaide. You should try the blinchiks (savoury crepes), the Queen cake (Armenia's national cake, voted the 'must-take-home item' when
The Advertiser covered the farmers' markets). And the lemon-cashew biscuits. Nicky's Gluten-Free food is all home-made. Dyer's bakery sells rye bread and other artisan styles that are completely unique.
It is food with a distinctive name and taste. If you are anywhere near the Hills on a Saturday, it is worth the visit.
