The build up to the silly season is an exciting time for kids. It's a time of school concerts, making greeting cards, and decorating the tree. But nothing is more exciting for Adelaide children than to have an outing to a Christmas pageant. To attend the big one that started all this mayhem and jubilation, even if only once or twice in a childhood is a must. The Adelaide Credit Unions Christmas Pageant made my list of top 20 things for growing up in Adelaide.

If you have attended the Adelaide city pageant a number of times and would like to see something different, then this guide will help you. There is now a Christmas parade in every area north and south and in some country areas also. I have limited this list to only Adelaide events. Maybe your family is very keen and would like to see them all. Some are bigger and better than others, and perhaps a smaller one may be more suitable especially for little kids who cannot sit and wait for hours.

Essentially a pageant is a parade of all things Christmas, such as floats, brass bands, marching girls, clowns and fairies and the jolly man in the red suit to wave to us all. So here is a helpful guide to every pageant with all things Christmas in Adelaide with the dates for 2016.

Adelaide CBD- Credit Union Christmas Pageant.
DATE Saturday 12th November from 9.30am
After all these years this is sure a spectacular event and is one of Adelaide's biggest, drawing thousands of people. It is a very big day out for young kids and it is very crowded. Many people go early with food, drinks and seats to mark their spot close to the blue line. Kids sit on rugs or cushions at the front along the blue line and adults bring a camp chair and sit behind. You cannot put one foot over the blue line, or the clowns will come and tell you off. You never know what the weather will be each year. I have stood there with showers and a coat on and at other times it may be so warm everyone seeks shelter under a tree. It takes 2 hours to complete the route so check out your spot on the route map here.

Campbelltown Christmas Parade
DATE Sunday 4th December at 5pm
The route follows Stradbroke Road to Thorndon Park and will be followed by 'Carols in the Park'

Mt Barker Christmas Pageant
DATE Saturday December 3rd at 11am
At this point dear readers, I will tell you it is often difficult researching some information for articles. The Mt Barker people have their own excellent pageant website, with a great photo gallery. It would help however if they added the time, so hopefully someone will do this. There is a route map and more so check it out if heading up to the hills.

L.J. Hooker Stirling Christmas Pageant
DATE Sunday 20th November 11.30 am
The parade winds along the main street, then everyone walks over to the oval for a huge Spring fair with lots of Christmas goodies and gifts for sale. Lots of family entertainment.

Norwood Christmas Pageant
DATE Saturday 26th November. Starts at 10am.
This parade starts on the western end of The Parade near Wood Street near the oval and runs all the way to Queen Street near Beaulah Road. This pageant has a great community vibe and local children are invited to participate by registering to be in the parade in one of their special costumes. Lots of clowns and fairies in this one.

Salisbury Community Christmas Parade
DATE Saturday 19th November 10.30-11.30 am
The venue is John Street, which makes it very handy for families coming by public transport as right near the train and bus stops. Later wander Civic Square for an array of entertainment and amusement rides over the afternoon.

Port Adelaide/Enfield Twilight Pageant
DATE Saturday 19th November from 6pm
Finally, someone is embracing our daylight saving and putting on events after what can be a hot day at this time of year. The Parade runs along Commercial Road which is perfect for those arriving by train. Take a jacket for the sea breeze and the after party. This has live music on stage and lots of food and more from 7pm at the square at the lighthouse. It will feel like Christmas by nightfall with a fireworks at around 9pm with a sensational display over the water. A great evening out for families and not too late to bed for Mum and Dad.

Onkaparinga Christmas Pagaent
DATE Sunday 20th November
A well-patronised parade of over 10,000 kids and their families down south. The parade goes along Christies Beach Road and then ends with festivities in Rotary Park. There is a whole afternoon of family fun, with live music, lots of stalls and kids entertainment. As you can imagine many streets are closed and parking problems. Best to get the bus to this one. Glenelg Christmas Pageant
DATE Sunday 20th November
9.30 am for entertainment, with parade from 10.30am
This one runs along the length of Jetty Road. I have attended this one and as an adult found it a bit long and boring. There were lots of school groups in the parade and not much on the entertainment side.

Lobethal Christmas Pageant
Date Wednesday 23rd December. 6-9pm.
This must be the only weekday parade. A good time to see the parade and the Christmas lights around the town. But be warned, when I last went here I didn't get home until midnight as the roads are so busy and the place is crowded. The whole town is alive with all things that jingle, and it's a little like Christmas in Europe, so worth a trip even just once.

Playford Christmas Pageant
DATE 25th November 9.30am
This is a community-based parade with 40 floats. It is held around the streets of the Munno Para Shopping Centre, so plenty of parking. Timed in the morning, so you go indoors and do your Christmas shopping after the event and perhaps some refreshments.

Barossa Valley Christmas Pageant
A pageant is held in Tanunda, however, they have had trouble with sponsorship. The news is it will still go ahead but no date is released as yet. I will update you closer in time.
