Now we all know that cheap eats do not necessarily mean good pub meals, but hey, restaurant reviews show that paying top dollar won't guarantee the best pub meal either.
Until recently there was little doubt about the cheapest in Adelaide - The Jolly Miller on Adam Street Hindmarsh had a great lunchtime special - $5 for a schnitzel or a serve of fish and chips. Sadly the pub is now undergoing renovations until November, and that special is unlikely to be brought back.
After lots of Googling and grilling the grapevine, the best deal I have come up with is the The Oriental's Sunday night special of $5 for a T-bone steak. Pretty awesome in these tight times, and well worth a look after spending up big over the weekend.
The Archer in North Adelaide does a weekday $10 Parmi Lunch, and if that doesn't grab your taste buds they offer more choices (including Mediterranean roast vegetables) on their $12 weekday menu.
On the other side of town the Maid of Auckland does their $10 Maid burger anytime in the saloon bar, and if you don't mind pre-ordering they also have a $12 weekday lunch menu.
Across the road at The Avoca you will be ok early in the week, with $12 lunchtime specials from Monday to Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday cheap schnitzels are up, while on Wednesday you have a choice of a chicken burger or pizza for the price.
Down the road the Warradale Hotel has $9 schnitzels on Tuesdays, and $12 schnitzels on Wednesdays.
You can pick up some good discounts at a range of pubs using Shopper Dockets, although most deals require that you pay full price for one meal to get a discount on the second. Make sure you enter your postcode first to get local specials.
I looked at the Goody Hotel a while back, and it is still offering some good deals. Mondays and Tuesdays chicken and beef schnitzels are $10 all day, while on Thursdays you can pick up one of five different flavoured gourmet pizzas for $10.
Meanwhile back in the city, some cheap eats that I didn't mention in the previous article is the $10 menu from the Edinburgh Castle. There are a total of nine tasty looking options on the menu, ranging from salads to schnitzels and pasta to pizza. There's a vegan and vegetarian meals too. It's available for lunch and dinner every day (except Mondays when they are closed). Definitely worth a look, but be quick as it may change from mid October.
There's no way I can cover all the pubs in the suburbs, so let me know the best pub meal deal out your way in the comments and we will make sure it gets a mention.
The Fountain Inn Hotel, on Glen Osmond Rd and Fullarton has a great $12 lunch menu, that ranges from the typical fish & chips and schnitty sangas, to a really tasty selection of wraps, served on a pot?!
It's not a pub but their meals are sensational and the sea views are great. Dirt cheap too $9.90 for their famous curries on Thursday with free Live Blues Playin Fridays has steaks from $12.90 with a Massive 400gr steak $14 ... Hi, have you tried The Kings (corner of King William and Sturt Street)? They offer a decent $10 lunch every weekday. It's different each day. Seem like a good deal. And they claim to use only SA produce.
