Adam Kay is a former UK doctor turned BAFTA-winning comedian and author of the bestselling nonfiction book, This is Going to Hurt. In his hilarious live comedy show by the same name, Adam reads from the diary he wrote spanning his time from being a Junior doctor to a Senior house officer in UK hospitals in the NHS. Adam shares anecdotes about life on and off the hospital wards, which range from being hilariously funny to bizarre and include some that are poignant and distressing.

Interspersed with the diary entries, Adam launches into hilarious and cleverly crafted songs about medical issues, procedures and a new drug with a complicated name that fits to the tune of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. The songs cover topics like "What do anaesthetists do when we are asleep", "The menopause is going around" and a medical quiz that called for collective responses from the audience, which had the crowd laughing raucously.

The show takes a sobering turn at the end as Adam shares the distressing childbirth experience that he was involved in that left him emotionally broken. The audience leant in and followed the heartbreaking details of what it was like for Adam to experience loneliness and a lack of support after this procedure that had a terrible outcome. Adam also shares the poignant statistics around medical staff and their mental health.

Adam's show This is Going to Hurt is both hilarious and sobering but definitely one to see.
This is Adam's first tour of Australia where he is performing at the 2024 Melbourne International Comedy Festival but I hope he returns for future festivals.
