New to Canberra, I love exploring this city and the secrets that it holds with my family.
Food, Wine & Fashion at Thoroughbred Park
It is Melbourne Cup time again, so it's time to dust off the hat and frock up for the big event. ACTTAB Melbourne Cup Race Day at Thoroughbred Park in Lyneham is Canberra's most popular event with fashion parades, members tents, local racing (from 1pm), food, wine and watching the race on the big screen from Flemington.
It is a time for socialising, fun and of course trying to pick a winner by the colour of the horse, the colour of the horses silks or a hidden meaning in the horses name (unless you actually know what you are doing!)
Whilst getting frocked up for the occasion, why not enter the The Canberra Outlet Centre Fashions on the Field competition. Categories are Classic Ladies Racewear, Classic Mens Racewear and Classic Couples Racewear. You can also make your own hat or fascinator to create an original look.
For men, the official lapel flower for the Melbourne Cup is the Yellow Rose.
You can register on the day, or you may get a tap on the shoulder from an expert Fashion on the Field scout to invite you to enter. If you choose to enter, there are specifications and tips for each category of this event, see here for more details.

There are numerous Race Day Packages to choose from including air conditioned function rooms, various marquees or Picnic Place with chairs and tables out on the lawns.
There will be large corporate groups in some marquees, however smaller social groups can book tables in shared marquees or function rooms also.
Package tickets to this event need to be purchased by October 20th so get in early if you wish to enjoy this day at the horses with friends, family or colleagues. See their website for more details.

If you wish to enjoy the atmosphere without the cost, you can also pack your own picnic to sit on the lawns or order a picnic hamper - which need to be booked at least 2 weeks before the event to pick up on the day. Please note that you can't bring your own alcohol into the event.
If you don't want to drive, ACTION Buses will operate throughout the course of the day (with free buses to the city after the event), however you can drive and park onsite for $5 a car. See the ACTION website for more info closer to the event.
For a fun-filled day out in Canberra, head out to Thoroughbred Park for the 2015 Melbourne Cup Race Day. Get involved in a sweep, try your luck and get caught up in the atmosphere.
Nothing beats the excitement as the gun is fired and the race begins at the Melbourne Cup...
