Grannies, grandparents, nans; however you address your parents parents, one thing is for sure - you wouldn't be here without them.

Most of us will admit we don't see our grandparents often enough, but instead of beating yourself up about it, consider the following fun activities. If we're honest, none of us enjoy sitting in front of the telly watching poor TV, but you do it for your granny. Turn the weekly, fortnightly, or (God forbid) monthly visit into something more enjoyable. Like...

Give them your iPod

[ADVERT]I'm serious. If Kanye West and a bit of Keane is your kind of music, then share. If you love Taylor Swift's teen melodies let your grandad have a listen. If it's the beat or the lyrics of your favourite artists which make them your favourite, let the oldies in on the act. Explain why you 'love' that particular artist to your grandparents; they might giggle and laugh, or say you're listening to rubbish, but it's a bit of your interests shared, and that's all they want.

Listen to their music

Grandparents love it when you take an interest in what they do and how they spend their leisure time. Music is an essential part of everyone's life, even if you think you're grandparents are 'past it'. No matter your age, music makes us all smile, so listen to those scratchy records your grandpa enjoys, or the Charleston your nan dances to. They will be even happier if you enjoy listening.

Do the bop

Okay maybe not, but get moving. Exercise is more fun with your elders. Fact. I recently attended a family party and my nan, who rarely dances, suddenly got up and started cutting a rug with my sisters and I. At one point she even removed her jacket because she was hot from dancing. It lifted the mood and she was in such a joyful mood for the rest of the evening. Dancing, walking, or making up your own exercise with your loved grandparents promises to be a fun activity, and will no doubt result in a lot of laughs.

Gossip
Talking helps everything, and grandparents love a good chat. Whenever I visit my nan and grandad's house we always have a good long chat about anything and everyone: family, friends, current affairs, and everything in between.

Become the chef

Cooking and food goes hand in hand with the way I feel about my grandparents. From my grandad's carrot cake to my nanny's perfect rice, I can't separate the two. But instead of enjoying the food your grandma serves, why not cook for her? Make it a talking point with a bit of bravado and pretence, and it'll have them chuckling at the way you slice your onions or seal your chicken. Turn their smiles into an impressed grin, however, by whipping up an exciting dish that will blow them away. If you need a little guidance on the way, don't be afraid to ask for their expert advice.

Just try one of the above activities, and turn your planned visit to granny and grandad's into an even more precious time.
