Madagascar Party at ACMI

Complimenting ACMI's exclusive DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition, this special day will include craft, screen workshops and performances.

Kids Claymation: Animated Escapades Workshop
When: Thu 25 Sep and Fri 26 Sep, 10am to 4pm
Cost: Full $90 Concession $80 ACMI Member $75

Aimed at children aged 9 to 12yrs, this one-day workshop will have your kids creating their very own claymation spectacular.

Seen in films such as Curse of the Were Rabbit (2005) and Chicken Run (2000), claymation is a fun and popular animation technique involving numerous photographs of clay characters which are then stitched together to form a short story.

Combined with designed sets and studio lighting, claymation films come to life as frames are sped up and sound effects are introduced. Your children will learn tricks and techniques of stop motion animation including how to develop a story, plan shots, create characters from clay and set backgrounds.

The cost includes a take-home USB flash drive containing your child's finished film. Tickets must be purchased in advance. For more information and booking details head to ACMI's creative workshops webpage here.

Your children will play a part in an exciting expedition as it unfolds across a series of exotic locations inspired by scenes in the Madagascar movies. Just like Alex, Marty and Melman, your children will never know where they will end up.

This will be a great opportunity to work on performance skills and learn how a green screen studio works.

Sessions are FREE. Drop in ten minutes before the hour, for sessions beginning at 11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm.

Working in a small group under the guidance of experienced staff, your children will create a team name for their movie 'studio', pitch ideas, write a script, storyboard, act, direct and operate a camera. Filming takes place on location at ACMI and around Federation Square.

The Animation Challenge: Pt 5
When: Sun 21 Sep, 10am
Cost: Free limited capacity

This intermix filmmaking program is aimed at young people aged 15-20. In celebration of DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition, this series of workshops has followed the DreamWorks Animation pipeline to create a short animated film over five months. This will be the fifth and final workshop in the extended series, focusing on editing all animations into a complete film.

Music, narration, voice-over and sound effects techniques are also explored in this final editing stage. Films are then rendered before a colour grade is added to the production. On film completion, participants will discover the best places to screen it and learn about the competitions open to animators. Register by emailing intermix@acmi.net.au.
